Chapter 28 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Three weeks later, the Marlowe County municipal building felt entirely different. The oppressive, shadowy atmosphere engineered by Cole and his cronies had been thoroughly scrubbed away, replaced by an air of transparency and reform. Tessa and I were sitting in my newly designated office on the second floor—a spacious corner room with a clear view of the bustling harbor. My desk was piled high with system architecture blueprints, but this time, they were blueprints for a secure, incorruptible emergency dispatch infrastructure that put civilian safety above corporate greed. The door swung open, and Agent Vance stepped inside, holding a pair of heavy cardboard boxes filled with personal items recovered from the old sub-basement archive. "Just dropping off the last of the rescued files from the raid," Vance said with a friendly nod, setting the boxes down on the side table. "The grand jury indictment was finalized this morning. Cole is facing thirty years on federal wire fraud and conspiracy charges, and Vivian’s family estate is being liquidated to pay back the embezzled emergency funds." I offered him a grateful smile. "Thank you, Agent Vance. For keeping your word and looking at the raw data when no one else would." He paused at the door, offering a reassuring grin. "You did the heavy lifting, Rachel. Marlowe County owes you its future."
