Chapter 29 - A New Horizon on the Bay

That evening, after the office had emptied out and the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in fiery hues of orange and crimson, Tessa and I drove out to the coastal cliffs overlooking Pier 4. The wind was cool and salt-kissed, carrying the distant sound of seagulls wheeling over the rolling waves. We leaned against the hood of the truck, sipping hot coffee from a thermos and watching the lights of the harbor blink to life one by one as night settled over the coast. "Do you think we'll ever be able to look at a CAD terminal the same way again?" Tessa asked softly, a faint smile playing on her lips as she gazed out at the water. I laughed, wrapping my jacket tighter around myself against the evening chill. "Probably not without a twinge of PTSD. But at least now, when those screens light up, we know the data is real. The system is finally working for the people it was built to protect." We stood in comfortable silence for a long time, watching the tide roll gently against the rocky shore, washing away the last lingering shadows of the nightmare we had survived. Everything was finally back in balance, and the horizon stretched out before us, completely clear, peaceful, and entirely our own.
