Chapter 30 - The Unseen Signal

The morning air was crisp and clear as I unlocked the front doors of the newly rebranded Marlowe County Emergency Response Center, stepping into the bright, modern lobby where the hum of high-end server racks echoed softly from the secured data room down the hall. Everything was running at peak efficiency, the new oversight protocols ensuring absolute transparency across every digital channel. I sat down at my desk, booted up my primary workstation, and watched as the system diagnostics scrolled green across the screen—stable, secure, and untouchable. I reached for my coffee, turning toward the window to watch the morning ferry glide across the harbor, when a sudden, sharp chime broke the ambient quiet of the office. It wasn't an emergency alert, nor was it a system error. I frowned, pulling up the administrative console to trace the source of the audio ping. A single, isolated data packet was routing itself directly into my terminal from an unknown external IP address originating deep within the federal correctional facility upstate where Gerald Cole was currently being held. My fingers hovered over the keyboard as a single line of unencrypted text began to type itself automatically across the center of my screen, flashing once in a brilliant, warning red before the entire monitor suddenly locked down tight.
