Chapter 10 - The Emergency Family Summit

By 8:00 AM the next morning, the private dining room of a five-star hotel downtown looked less like a corporate meeting space and more like a war room.
Julian had arranged the summit. Sitting at the far end of the long mahogany table—ironically, a near-replica of the table in my old suburban home—was Eleanor Sterling. Gone was the immaculate, untouchable dowager of high society. Her hair was hastily pinned, her eyes were bloodshot from lack of sleep, and her hands trembled slightly as she clutched a porcelain teacup.
To her right sat Mark, looking hollow-eyed and desperate, wearing a wrinkled suit that had clearly been slept in. Across from them sat Eric, sweating profusely despite the room's cool air conditioning, staring fixedly at the polished wood surface.
And at the head of the table, sitting upright in a high-backed leather chair with my legs crossed and my hands resting calmly in my lap, sat me.
Mark looked up, his eyes locking onto mine. For a fraction of a second, raw confusion flashed across his face, quickly replaced by incandescent rage.
"What is *she* doing here?" Mark roared, slamming his palm onto the table. "Eleanor, tell this trashy nobody to get out of our family meeting! Security! Get her out of—"
"Quiet, Mark," Julian Vance’s voice cut through the room like a razor-sharp blade. Julian was standing just behind my right shoulder, functioning not as an assistant, but as an apex predator guarding its territory.
Eleanor slowly turned her head, her glacial eyes fixing on me. When she spoke, her voice was a brittle whisper, stripped of its usual haughty arrogance. "How did you do this?"
"Do what, Eleanor?" I asked softly, picking up my own teacup and taking a delicate sip. "Survive? Or watch you all tear each other apart because you spent decades believing your last name made you immune to the laws of morality and physics?"
"You ruined us," Eric whimpered, his voice cracking. "You leaked the banking logs to Julian's firm!"
"I didn't leak anything to Julian," I corrected smoothly, setting the teacup down with a soft *clink*. "I simply filed standard public transparency reports regarding corporate embezzlement within the Sterling pension fund. If your brother chose to steal from his employees, and your mother chose to look the other way while funding your gambling addiction, that is hardly my fault."
Mark lunged forward across the table, his fingers clawing at the air as if he wanted to throttle me right there. "I'll destroy you! I'll make sure you never work in this city again! I'll—"
*Bang.*
Julian’s hand came down hard on the table, the sharp report silencing Mark instantly. Julian stepped forward, towering over Mark with an expression of absolute contempt.
"Mr. Sterling," Julian said, his voice dangerously low. "You are currently facing twenty counts of federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy. Your bank accounts are frozen, your wife is recovering from a public assault after being disowned by your own brother, and the federal grand jury is currently reviewing your indictment papers. The only reason you are sitting in this room instead of a holding cell is because Mrs. Sterling—your legally wedded wife—has not yet signed the emergency corporate restructuring waiver."
Mark froze. He slowly turned his head to look at me, the horror finally dawning in his eyes.
"Sarah..." Mark whispered, his voice trembling, the arrogant corporate titan completely vanished, replaced by a terrified, cornered animal. "Sarah, please. We were married. We shared a home. Drop the charges. Sign the waiver. Help me."

I looked down at him, remembering every anniversary he spent with his mistress, every time he humiliated me in front of his wealthy friends, every single night I sat alone at that massive mahogany table while he drank expensive scotch and told me I was nothing.
"Classy," I said softly, echoing his favorite word back to him. "Isn't it?"
