Chapter 11 - The Final Signature (Cliffhanger)

The silence in the private dining room was so absolute that the hum of the air conditioning unit sounded like a jet engine. Mark was staring at me, his mouth slightly open, the last shreds of his shattered dignity evaporating into the thin air.
Eleanor closed her eyes, leaning her head back against her chair. She knew it was over. The Sterling dynasty—built on decades of ruthless ambition, social snobbery, and financial deceit—had finally crumbled into dust. And the instrument of its destruction was the very woman they had dismissed as a background decoration.
Julian slid a single sheet of heavy parchment across the table, stopping it right in front of me. At the bottom was a blank line awaiting my signature.
"The restructuring deed," Julian said quietly, his hand resting lightly on the back of my chair. "Once you sign this, Sarah, Sterling Enterprises becomes legally yours. Every asset, every property, every account—all transferred directly into your name. Mark and his family walk away with nothing, exactly as they deserve."
I picked up the heavy silver fountain pen Julian offered me. The metal felt cool and balanced in my hand.
Mark let out a pathetic, ragged sob, burying his face in his hands. Eric stared blankly at the wall, completely catatonic. Even Eleanor didn't protest anymore; she simply stared straight ahead, a broken woman waiting for the final executioner's stroke.
I positioned the tip of the fountain pen directly above the signature line. The ink glistened under the chandelier light.
*Scratch.*
I wrote the first letter of my first name. *S.*
Just as the pen lifted to complete the second letter, the heavy mahogany double doors of the private dining room burst open with a deafening crash.
Everyone at the table jumped. Julian’s hand instantly slipped inside his jacket, his fingers brushing the grip of a concealed security holster.
Standing in the doorway, panting heavily, was Vanessa. Her face was bruised and plastered with heavy makeup to hide the swelling from the courthouse slap. Her designer coat was torn at the shoulder, and her eyes were wild, staring directly at me with a look of pure, unadulterated madness.
In her trembling right hand, she wasn't holding a handbag or a legal brief. She was pointing a heavy, black, snub-nosed revolver directly at my chest.

"If I don't get everything," Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking hysterically as she cocked the hammer of the gun with a sharp, ominous *click*, "no one gets a damn thing!"
Time seemed to freeze. The pen slipped from my fingers, rolling across the mahogany table. Julian lunged toward me, but the barrel of Vanessa's gun swung his way, her finger tightening convulsively on the trigger.
