Chapter 4 - The Midnight Meeting

The lobby of Miller & Vance Law Firm was illuminated by soft blue recessed lighting and polished marble floors that reflected my heels as I walked briskly toward the security desk. It was past midnight, but high-end corporate law never truly sleeps, especially when empires are crumbling.
"Good evening, ma'am. Do you have an appointment?" the security guard asked, looking slightly surprised to see a woman in a chic dress walking in unannounced at this hour.
"Tell partner Julian Vance that Sarah Sterling is downstairs," I said, my voice steady, carrying an absolute authority that made the guard hesitate for only a second before picking up his desk phone.
Julian Vance was known as the 'Shark of Wall Street.' He was brilliant, expensive, and completely devoid of mercy when it came to corporate battles. He also happened to be a man who owed my late father a massive professional debt from a case twenty years ago—a debt Julian had sworn to me personally he would repay whenever I called.
Within five minutes, a sleek private elevator dinged, and a tall man in a sharp charcoal suit stepped out. Julian’s silver-streaked hair and sharp, hawkish eyes scanned the lobby until they landed on me. A slow, knowing smile spread across his face.
"Sarah," Julian said, walking forward and extending a hand. "It’s been a long time. Though I expected your first call to be for a simple divorce, not a midnight corporate raid."
I shook his hand firmly, holding his gaze without blinking. "Good evening, Julian. It looks like my husband decided to make things a lot more complicated than a simple divorce."
Julian turned and gestured toward the private elevator. "Walk with me. My office is upstairs, and I suspect you have documents that are going to keep us both very busy until sunrise."
As the elevator carried us silently up to the forty-fifth floor, overlooking the glittering skyline of the city, I pulled out my phone and forwarded the encrypted email containing the financial audit and the parking garage video directly to Julian’s secure corporate tablet.
He glanced down at the screen as the elevator doors opened. His stride faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyebrows shooting up in genuine surprise.
"Well, well, well," Julian murmured, stepping into his expansive, glass-walled corner office. He tossed his jacket over the back of a leather armchair and sat down behind his massive mahogany desk, tapping rapidly on his tablet. "Your husband, Mark Sterling, is not just a cheater. He is an exceptionally stupid criminal."
"Explain," I said, taking a seat opposite him and crossing my legs.
"These offshore accounts," Julian pointed at the screen, zooming in on a series of transaction codes. "They aren't just embezzled funds from his firm. They are tied directly to federal compliance violations. And look at this proxy signature here." Julian looked up, his eyes locking onto mine with grave seriousness. "Sarah, he listed *your* name as the primary beneficial owner of the shell company holding over two million dollars in illicit funds. If the authorities walk in tomorrow, *you* are the one facing federal indictment for white-collar conspiracy and wire fraud. Not him."
A cold shiver ran down my spine, but it was quickly replaced by a burning resolve. Mark wasn't just trying to humiliate me socially. He was planning to sacrifice me to save his own skin if his illicit empire collapsed.
"Can we flip the script?" I asked quietly, my voice devoid of fear. "Can we make sure that when the authorities walk in, they arrest him instead?"
Julian leaned back in his chair, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his face. He looked at me not as an old family friend, but as a terrifyingly capable adversary who had just walked into his office holding the winning lottery ticket.

"Sarah," Julian said softly, picking up his desk phone. "Not only can we flip the script, but I’m going to make sure Mark Sterling loses his job, his money, his mistress, and his freedom before the week is over. Let’s make some calls."
