Chapter 9 - The Ghost from the Past

The word *majority* hung in the cool rooftop air, suspended between us like a challenge. I stared at Julian Vance, measuring the weight of his proposal. Sterling Enterprises—the very corporate giant whose executives had treated me like a piece of antique furniture, good only for aesthetic value—was being handed to me on a silver platter.

"What's the catch, Julian?" I asked, keeping my voice level, though my heart was beating a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

Julian picked up his water glass, swirling the ice cubes before setting it back down. "To legally restructure the company and prevent Mark's creditors from tying up the assets in endless litigation, we need to invoke a specific clause in the original founding charter. A clause written by Mark's grandfather back in 1952."

"The lineage clause," I murmured, recalling the dusty legal documents I had read through late at night while Mark was away on his supposed 'business trips' with mistresses.

"Precisely," Julian nodded approvingly. "The company cannot pass into the hands of an outside private equity firm without a surviving spouse or a direct bloodline heir holding veto power. Since Mark has effectively disqualified himself through criminal activity, the veto power defaults automatically to his legal wife."

I let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Which currently, technically, is still me. We haven't finalized the divorce yet because Mark refused to sign the preliminary papers unless I walked away with zero alimony."

"And he won't sign them now, either, out of pure, unadulterated spite," Julian said, leaning back in his chair. "Which means we have to force his hand. But Mark isn't the biggest obstacle in this scenario. His mother is."

Eleanor Sterling. The matriarch of the family. A woman whose face looked like it had been carved from Antarctic ice, and whose tongue was sharper than a surgical scalpel. I remembered the last family dinner I had attended before being uninvited—the night Vanessa announced her charity gala, and Eleanor looked me up and down with undisguised disgust, remarking that some people simply lacked the 'pedigree' required to sit at the family table.

"Eleanor is currently holed up at her country estate in Connecticut," I said, my mind racing through the tactical possibilities. "She has her own set of offshore accounts, completely insulated from Mark's mess."

"Not anymore," Julian replied, pulling a sleek black tablet from his leather briefcase and sliding it across the table. "Two hours ago, Eleanor's primary Swiss holding account was flagged by international tax authorities. Do you know who triggered the audit?"

I glanced down at the tablet screen. The digital dossier displayed a scanned signature on a confidential whistleblower complaint submitted to the international banking commission.

The signature read: *Eric Sterling.*

My eyes widened. "Mark's brother? The golden boy? The one who supposedly ran the London branch of the family trust?"

"The very same," Julian said, a cold, predatory smile touching his lips. "Eric didn't just cut Vanessa out of the family trust on television; he systematically drained Eleanor's private reserves to pay off his own multi-million-dollar gambling debts in Macau. The Sterling family isn't just collapsing from external pressure, Sarah. They are eating their own from the inside out."
