Chapter 3 - The Aftermath and the Anonymous Message

The cool night air hit my face like a refreshing wave as I stepped out of the sprawling suburban mansion and walked down the paved driveway. The street was quiet, lined with towering oak trees and the glowing porch lights of wealthy neighbors who had no idea the kind of explosive drama unfolding just behind closed doors.
My phone buzzed in my hand. I pulled it out and saw a text message from an unknown number.
*Unknown:* "It’s only just beginning. Check your email."
I frowned, pausing by my car—a reliable sedan I had bought myself, parked a safe distance away from Mark’s flashy luxury SUV. I unlocked my phone, opened the mail app, and refreshed my inbox. At the very top was a new message from a secure, encrypted email address with no subject line.
Inside the email was a single PDF document and a short video clip.
My curiosity piqued, I tapped the video. It played instantly, showing high-definition security footage from the Grand Regency hotel parking garage, dated just two weeks prior. On screen, Mark was walking out of the elevator with a stunning, tall blonde woman who definitely wasn't me, laughing as he handed her the keys to a brand-new luxury sports car—a car paid for by corporate accounts.
I scrolled down to the PDF. It was a detailed financial audit report outlining a series of massive, unauthorized wire transfers from corporate accounts to offshore shell companies, all authorized by Mark’s signature as CFO. Embezzlement. Tax fraud. Corporate espionage.
Whoever sent this wasn't just trying to help me get revenge; they were dropping a nuclear bomb on Mark's entire career and freedom.
My phone buzzed again. Another text from the same unknown number.
*Unknown:* "He didn't just cheat on you emotionally, Sarah. He used your name as a proxy for three of those shell companies. If the SEC or the FBI investigates, you're the one holding the bag unless you act fast."
My breath caught in my throat. The cold realization washed over me like icy water. Mark hadn't just been keeping me around as a quiet, submissive trophy wife who stayed home while he wined and dined high-society mistresses. He had been setting me up to take the fall if his illegal financial schemes ever came to light.
Pure, unadulterated fury replaced the quiet satisfaction I had felt just moments ago. They thought I was weak. They thought I was the unrefined, uneducated girl from the wrong side of the tracks who would just take whatever scraps they threw my way, fold under pressure, and absorb the blame for their crimes.
They had no idea who they were dealing with.
I unlocked my car, slid into the driver's seat, and tossed my purse onto the passenger side. I didn't drive home to the empty, quiet house we shared. Instead, I drove straight downtown, heading toward a tall glass-and-steel skyscraper that housed one of the most ruthless corporate litigation and criminal defense firms in the city.
My father had always told me before he passed away: *“When someone hands you a knife, Sarah, don’t just cut them back. Take the whole arm.”*

It was time to take off the gloves.
