Chapter 13 - Gathering the Storm

Cynthia’s veiled threats rattled me more than I cared to admit, but instead of retreating into fear, I channeled every ounce of that nervous energy into action. I knew that leaving my safety entirely in the hands of the state wasn't enough; I needed to understand what Cynthia was hinting at. Was there an offshore account Diane had hidden? Was there some lingering legal loophole Mark was trying to exploit behind the scenes? The next morning, while Daisy was napping peacefully in her crib, I sat at my desk and pulled up Sarah Jenkins’s secure email address. Sarah had been my rock throughout the custody battle, a brilliant attorney who knew every dirty trick the corporate elite liked to play. I typed out a detailed account of my encounter with Cynthia outside the market, specifically mentioning her ominous warning about the Evans family's deep roots and unrecovered assets. Within an hour, my phone rang. It was Sarah.

"Clara," Sarah’s voice crackled through the speaker, crisp and urgent. "I'm glad you reached out immediately. Cynthia is a professional corporate cleaner. If she's resurfaced and making threats, it means she's either trying to salvage her own sinking ship by digging up dirt, or Mark is foolish enough to pay her under the table to find a way to break the asset freeze." My stomach tightened. "Can they do that? I thought Judge Sterling's ruling was airtight," I asked, gripping the edge of the desk. "Judge Sterling’s ruling on custody and asset forfeiture is as solid as granite," Sarah assured me calmly. "However, desperate people do desperate things. Cynthia knows where bodies are buried—metaphorically speaking. During the initial raid, the financial forensics team found a discrepancy in the family trust accounts, but we ran out of time to trace the final wire transfers before Diane was locked away. If Cynthia is circling back, she might be trying to locate those hidden funds to bargain her way out of her own impending perjury charges."

"What do we do?" I asked, determination surging through my veins. "We beat them to the punch," Sarah replied without hesitation. "I'm filing an emergency motion for a forensic financial audit expansion. If there is a hidden stash of cash or offshore accounts tied to Mark or Diane that could threaten your financial security or Daisy's trust, we need to uncover it legally and seize it before Cynthia can manipulate it." Sarah paused for a second before continuing, her tone softening slightly. "Clara, you've built an incredible life for you and your daughter over the past year. Don't let this rattle your foundation. Let me handle the legal warfare while you focus on your classes and your baby." I thanked Sarah, hanging up the phone with a renewed sense of clarity. The Evans family thought they could bully their way through life forever, but they were about to find out that a mother protecting her child is the most formidable force on earth.
