Chapter 19 - The Chicago Connection

The following morning, Sarah Jenkins arrived at my apartment early, her expression grim as she dropped a thick file onto my kitchen table. She pulled out a printed corporate registry document and slid it toward me. "You were right to be suspicious, Clara," Sarah said, tapping her finger against a highlighted name on the page. "That Chicago consulting firm isn't a random enterprise. It’s a secondary shell company registered under a dormant corporate entity once controlled by Diane Evans's brother—your former uncle-in-law, Richard Vance, who has lived overseas for the past decade." My breath caught in my throat. "Richard? I thought he cut ties with the family years ago over business disputes." Sarah shook her head gravely. "He appeared to, but financial forensics show he’s been quietly liquidating remaining European assets and trying to funnel them through domestic third-party accounts to avoid international tax penalties. By attaching those funds to your professional business account, they were attempting to use your clean corporate identity as a laundering proxy, which could have triggered federal tax evasion audits against you."
Fury surged through my veins, hot and sharp. Even from behind prison walls, Diane and her inner circle were still trying to manipulate my life like chess pieces. "Can we trap them?" I asked, my voice steady and cold. Sarah’s lips curved into a sharp, confident smile. "We can do much better than that. Because you reported the unsolicited transaction immediately and haven't touched the funds, we can work with federal investigators to seize the entire account under money-laundering counter-measures, while simultaneously issuing an emergency subpoena for Richard Vance’s extradition testimony." I nodded resolutely, sliding the file back across the table. "Do it, Sarah. Let's cut off their last remaining lifeline once and for all."
