Chapter 18 - Shadows Beneath the Surface

With the legal battles completely behind us, I threw myself into growing my design studio and nurturing Daisy's boundless curiosity. The autumn chill gave way to the crisp, bracing winds of early winter, transforming the city streets into a wonderland of twinkling holiday lights and festive displays. One evening, after putting Daisy down for a long, untroubled slumber, I sat at my desk reviewing monthly financial statements. To my surprise, an unexpected wire notification popped up in my business email portal. It wasn't from any of my regular boutique clients or the asset trust fund. It was an anonymous retainer fee originating from a boutique legal consulting firm in Chicago, transferring a substantial five-figure sum directly into my professional account, accompanied by a cryptic memo line: *For design consultation services rendered to the estate.* I frowned at the screen, my heart rate spiking slightly. I had never signed any consulting contract with a Chicago firm, nor had I ever offered design services outside my established client roster.

Suspicion gnawed at the edges of my mind. Could Mark or Cynthia have found another backdoor channel to funnel money or manipulate my business accounts? I immediately reached out to Sarah Jenkins via an encrypted messaging app, forwarding the transaction details and asking her to run a background check on the originating routing numbers. Sarah replied within minutes, her tone uncharacteristically urgent. "Don't touch those funds, Clara. I'm pulling the corporate registration files for that Chicago firm right now. This doesn't look like a mistake; it looks like a calculated setup." My hands grew cold as I stared at the blinking cursor on my monitor. Even behind bars, the tentacles of my former life seemed determined to reach out and tangle me in their web. I paced the wooden floorboards of the living room, listening to the gentle hum of the refrigerator and the soft, rhythmic breathing of my daughter in the next room. Whatever game was being played behind the scenes, I vowed right then and there that I would not let anyone drag me back into the abyss.
