Chapter 7 - The House of Cards Collapses

Sarah Jenkins’s office on the twelfth floor of a gleaming downtown high-rise offered a sweeping view of the city skyline, but inside, the atmosphere was strictly business. Piles of legal briefs, color-coded exhibits, and transcripts covered her mahogany desk like a fortress of paper.
"Drink this," Sarah said gently, sliding a steaming cup of black coffee toward me as I settled into the leather client chair, keeping Daisy’s lightweight stroller parked securely right beside me.
"Thank you, Sarah," I murmured, wrapping my hands around the warm ceramic mug. "What did you mean when you said the security hard drives showed something worse?"
Sarah’s expression tightened into a hard, professional mask. She tapped a sleek tablet on her desk, turning the screen toward me to reveal a digital timeline annotated with audio waveforms and time-stamped video stills.
"When Sergeant Miller and the cyber-crime unit raided the Evans estate, they didn't just pull the cloud audio from the master hub," Sarah explained, her voice low and steady. "They decrypted the master local server in Mark’s home office. Clara, Diane didn't just push you by accident. The security footage from the hallway outside the nursery shows her deliberately waiting for you to pick up the baby, intentionally plotting the confrontation, and explicitly telling Mark weeks ago that she needed to 'break your spirit' so you would sign away your parental guardianship rights in the event of a divorce."
My breath hitched in my throat. The coffee mug nearly slipped from my fingers. "She... she planned it? All of it?"
"Premeditated endangerment," Sarah confirmed, sliding a printed deposition across the desk. "And Mark didn't just cover for her after the fact. The forensic transcripts show a text exchange between Mark and Diane twenty minutes before the assault happened. Mark texted: *'Just get the kid away from her, Mom. I can't stand her crying anymore, and my lawyers say if she has postpartum issues, we can strip custody before she files.'*"
The room seemed to spin. The man I had loved, the man I had shared a bed with and trusted with my entire life, had plotted to steal my child before she was even a month old, treating our daughter like a piece of leverage in a calculated corporate strategy.
"He signed his own legal death warrant," Sarah continued, her eyes sharp. "And so did Diane. When we walk into Judge Sterling’s courtroom for the emergency custody deposition in two hours, we aren't just asking for temporary protection. We are filing for an immediate, permanent termination of Mark's parental rights based on conspiracy and child endangerment, alongside a total freeze on his marital assets."
I looked down at Daisy, who was sleeping peacefully in her stroller, completely oblivious to the legal tsunami about to crush the people who had tried to destroy us. I straightened my shoulders, lifting my chin with a newfound strength.

"Let's go," I said, my voice unwavering. "I'm ready."
