Chapter 17 - Whispers in the Park

Two months slipped past in a rhythm of golden autumn afternoons and peaceful domestic routines. Daisy had grown taller, her vocabulary expanding into an adorable collection of half-formed words that filled our apartment with music. To secure our financial independence permanently, I officially launched my own independent digital design studio, registering the business under my maiden name and a new tax ID. Clients began trickling in through word-of-mouth recommendations, impressed by my quick turnaround times and clean aesthetic. One sunny Thursday morning, I packed a small picnic basket and walked Daisy down to the neighborhood park, where golden leaves crunched delightfully beneath the stroller’s wheels. The park was bustling with mothers, nannies, and toddlers playing near the wooden jungle gym. I found a shaded bench beneath a towering oak tree, spreading out a checkered blanket so Daisy could practice her waddling steps across the grass.

As I watched her chase a stray butterfly with infectious giggles, a woman in a beige trench coat sat down near the edge of the bench, holding a cup of takeout coffee. She didn't speak at first, but her quiet presence lingered in my peripheral vision. After a few moments, she turned slightly, her sunglasses catching the autumn sunlight. "You look completely at peace, Clara," a soft, familiar voice remarked. My body instantly tensed, my instincts flaring as my head whipped around. It wasn't Cynthia or Diane; it was Sarah Jenkins, my former attorney, smiling warmly beneath the brim of her silk scarf. I let out a long, shaky breath, relaxing my shoulders. "Sarah, you nearly gave me a heart attack," I murmured with a nervous laugh. Sarah chuckled softly, taking a sip of her coffee. "I apologize for the dramatic entrance, but I was in the neighborhood wrapping up a civil deposition and saw you from across the lawn. I wanted to drop off some final paperwork regarding the asset liquidation trust. Everything from Mark’s hidden offshore accounts has been fully converted and deposited into Daisy’s secure education and living trust. You are officially untouchable, legally and financially." A profound wave of relief washed over me. I thanked Sarah profusely as she handed me a slim manila folder, watching her stride away down the pathway. The last invisible anchor holding me to the Evans family tragedy had finally dissolved into nothingness.
