Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Battle

The thirteenth-floor family courtroom of the county courthouse was packed with the heavy, tense atmosphere of an impending storm. When I walked through the double doors flanked by Sarah Jenkins and Eleanor Vance, all eyes immediately turned toward us.

Diane Evans sat at the defense table in a standard-issue county orange jumpsuit, her once-impeccable silver hair disheveled, her face drawn and hollowed out by days in a holding cell. Beside her sat Mark, dressed in an expensive charcoal suit that suddenly looked three sizes too big for him. His face was pale, his eyes darting frantically around the room until they locked onto mine. He opened his mouth as if to speak, to offer one of his practiced, condescending excuses, but the cold, dead look in my eyes made him snap his jaw shut.

"All rise!" the bailiff barked sharply.

Judge Sterling entered from the chambers side door, his expression severe and unyielding as he adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses and reviewed the thick dossier of evidence resting on his bench.

"Be seated," Judge Sterling commanded, his deep voice echoing off the mahogany walls. "We are here for the emergency custody and protective order review in the matter of *Evans v. Evans*. Counsel, you may proceed."

Sarah Jenkins stood up immediately, buttoning her suit jacket with practiced grace. She stepped before the bench, her tablet displaying the decrypted security footage and text logs directly onto the courtroom’s high-definition projection screens.

For the next forty minutes, Sarah dismantled the Evans family empire piece by piece. She played the audio recordings of Diane’s vicious threats, displayed Mark’s cold text messages plotting to strip my custody rights, and presented Dr. Henderson’s definitive medical findings proving that Daisy’s near-fatal fall was the direct result of Diane’s violent physical assault.

Diane began to hyperventilate, whispering frantically to her court-appointed defense attorney, who simply rubbed his temples in sheer defeat. Mark stared down at the polished oak table, his hands trembling as the undeniable proof of his betrayal echoed through the silent courtroom.

When Sarah finally concluded her presentation, Judge Sterling sat in absolute silence for what felt like an eternity. He looked down from the elevated bench, first at Diane in her orange jumpsuit, then at Mark, and finally at me, sitting tall and resolute in the front row.

"In my thirty-two years on the bench," Judge Sterling began, his voice ringing with quiet, devastating fury, "I have rarely encountered such a depraved, calculated abuse of familial power and parental trust."

He picked up his heavy mahogany gavel.
