Chapter 13 - THE CONTENTS OF BOX 402

Eleanor carefully lifted the flash drive from the box, holding it by its edges as if it were venomous. "We need to plug this into a clean laptop—one that has never touched the internet. Do you have your offline burner?"

"In my bag," Maya said, her eyes scanning the chilling contents of the box around them.

The notebooks weren't just random musings; they were meticulous logs. Daniel had tracked every single person who had ever helped her, every doctor she had seen during her secret visits for her injuries, every friend who had dared to call her when Daniel wasn't in the room. He had been spying on her years before the night on the stairs. The "accident" hadn't been a sudden burst of rage; it had been the execution of a long-planned contingency.

They hauled the flash drive and three of the most suspicious notebooks back to the sterile anonymity of a nearby hotel room. Maya sat at the small desk, plugging the matte-black flash drive into the USB port of her air-gapped laptop.

A single folder appeared on the screen: *STRIKE_BACK.*

Inside were hundreds of audio files. Maya clicked on the first one, her finger hovering over the mouse.

The audio crackled to life. It was a recording from the study in Sterling Manor, dated three days before the stairs incident.

*"She’s getting too confident, Robert,"* Daniel’s voice rang out, cold and calculating. *"She actually spoke to a lawyer about the foundation assets. If she leaves, my board position goes with her. I can't let her ruin everything I’ve built."*

Another voice answered—deep, smooth, and instantly recognizable. It was Robert Vance, Daniel’s corporate attorney and longtime fixer.

*"Then make her incapable of managing anything,"* Robert replied smoothly on the tape. *"A fall down the grand staircase. Everyone knows she’s clumsy, always tripping over those designer heels. The family will back you up. They always do. Once she’s broken, she won't have the mental clarity to sign a divorce petition, let alone contest the assets."*

Maya sat frozen, the blood draining from her face. It wasn't just Daniel. It was a premeditated conspiracy backed by his inner circle—a circle that still held powerful influence in New York legal and financial circles.

And then, a second file caught her eye at the bottom of the folder. It was a video file, titled: *INSIDE_THE_BOARDROOM.*

Maya clicked play. The video loaded slowly, showing a high-resolution security feed of the Sterling Enterprises executive suite, recorded just two days ago.

Two men were sitting in the leather armchairs. One was Robert Vance. The other was a man Maya had never seen before—a federal prosecutor assigned to the Southern District of New York.

And they were talking about *her*.
