Chapter 16 - THE FALLOUT BEGINS

By dawn, the media storm had escalated into a Category 5 hurricane.
Sterling Manor, once a bastion of elite untouchability, was now surrounded by satellite trucks, live broadcast crews, and angry protesters holding signs demanding justice. Federal agents from an independent oversight division—dispatched by a panicked Attorney General’s office trying to distance themselves from Thomas Sterling—had arrived at the Southern District offices with warrants of their own.
Maya and Eleanor sat in a secure safehouse provided by their legal team in upstate New York, watching the live coverage on a wall-mounted television.
On screen, a visibly shaken Robert Vance was being led out of his Manhattan law office in handcuffs, his expensive silk tie missing, his face pale as reporters screamed questions at him. Moments later, Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Sterling was suspended indefinitely pending an emergency federal grand jury investigation into abuse of office and conspiracy.
The phone on the coffee table rang. Maya answered it.
"Mrs. Sterling?" a deep, formal voice spoke. "This is Director Vance—no relation to the defense team—of the Federal Oversight and Ethics Committee. We’ve reviewed the leaked files mirrored from your decentralized storage drop. The authenticity has been verified by our digital forensics team."
"I’m glad to hear the government is finally doing its job," Maya replied coolly, leaning back on the sofa.
"We are moving to freeze all remaining assets associated with Sterling Enterprises and Robert Vance’s firm," the Director continued. "Furthermore, the prosecutor’s office has formally opened a new criminal indictment against Daniel Sterling for attempted murder in the first degree, upgrading the charges based on the premeditated audio evidence you provided."
Maya closed her eyes for a brief moment, letting out a long, shuddering breath. The weight that had crushed her chest for years—the gaslighting, the silence, the terror of never being believed—finally evaporated completely.
"Thank you, Director," she said simply.
"No, Mrs. Sterling," the man on the other end said with unexpected reverence. "Thank *you*. You just dismantled a syndicate that the department has been trying to touch for a decade."
May you like
She hung up the phone and looked out the window at the rising sun cutting through the mountain mist. The nightmare was truly over. The monsters who had tried to bury her in the dark had been dragged out into the blazing light of public accountability.
