Chapter 25 - THE GRAND BALLROOM

The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a masterpiece of gilded molding, soaring ceilings, and cascading crystal chandeliers. Five hundred of the nation’s most elite citizens sat at round tables draped in white silk, murmuring quietly as classical music played softly from the overhead speakers. Flashbulbs flickered near the VIP tables, and the air hummed with the high-stakes energy of corporate power and philanthropy.
At the center head table sat Arthur Sterling, flanked by prominent senators, banking executives, and media moguls. He was chatting amiably with the CEO of a major global news network, his demeanor once again the picture of grace and generosity.
Off to the side of the stage, standing in the shadowed wings just behind the heavy velvet curtain, Maya stood in absolute silence. Eleanor stood beside her, gripping a tablet displaying the live analytics of the cyber portal.
"Ten minutes until cue," Eleanor whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. "The live stream is currently at two million concurrent viewers online. Every major news outlet has their feed locked onto this room. Jason is standing by with the finger on the launch button."
Maya nodded slowly. Her hand rested inside the pocket of her velvet gown, her thumb brushing against the cold, smooth glass of her smartphone. The screen was already unlocked, resting on the single encrypted command line that would simultaneously upload the entire archive to the global internet and trigger the unredacted audio playback across the ballroom’s main sound system.
On the stage, the master of ceremonies adjusted the microphone and spoke into the auditorium. "Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and patrons of the arts—it is my absolute honor to introduce a man whose lifelong dedication to philanthropy and corporate integrity has shaped the very fabric of our society. Please put your hands together for the chairman of the Sterling Foundation, Mr. Arthur Sterling!"
Deafening applause erupted across the ballroom. Five hundred people stood to their feet, clapping enthusiastically as Arthur rose from his seat. He smoothed his tuxedo jacket, flashed a brilliant, charismatic smile to the crowd, and walked up the carpeted steps to the podium with the practiced ease of a monarch accepting his crown.
He stood before the towering banks of microphones, waiting for the applause to subside before raising his hands in a gesture of humble gratitude.
"Thank you, thank you, my dear friends," Arthur began, his rich, resonant voice carrying effortlessly through the state-of-the-art acoustic speakers. "Tonight, we gather not only to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our foundation, but to reaffirm our commitment to values that transcend generations—integrity, resilience, and above all, family."
In the wings, Maya watched him through the gap in the velvet curtains. Her expression was like carved marble.
"He’s laying it on thick," Eleanor muttered under her breath. "Look at the board members at table two—they’re eating out of the palm of his hand."
Arthur continued, his voice swelling with emotional resonance. "For years, our community has faced trials, both public and private. We have seen those we love stumble, and we have stepped in to carry the burden. Tonight, as we honor my dear colleague Maya for her extraordinary resilience in the face of personal hardship, I am proud to announce a new era of unity—a permanent integration of our resources to ensure that the Sterling legacy endures..."

Maya slowly pulled her phone from her pocket. Her eyes locked onto the back of Arthur’s head as he smiled out at the adoring crowd, completely unaware that the ground beneath his feet had already turned to ash.
