Chapter 27 - THE FALL OF THE TITAN

Total, chaotic pandemonium erupted inside the Grand Ballroom.
Journalists were shouting over one another, thrusting microphones toward the stage while security guards, realizing the gravity of the situation, began moving quickly toward the podium to block the aisles. Arthur stood paralyzed, his hands gripping the edges of the wooden lectern so tightly his knuckles had turned completely white. His carefully constructed empire—decades of carefully guarded reputation, political influence, and untouchable wealth—was burning to the ground in real-time before millions of witnesses.
"Maya! Is this true? Did Arthur embezzle from the foundation?" shouted a prominent investigative reporter from the *Wall Street Journal*, vaulting over a velvet rope to get closer to the stage.
Before Arthur could regain his composure or mutter a single word in defense, the heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom burst open. Two federal marshals, flanked by local NYPD detectives in dark suits, marched purposefully down the central aisle, parting the stunned crowd with quiet authority. Their badges gleamed under the crystal chandeliers.
Arthur’s head whipped around, his eyes widening in horror as he watched the officers approach the stage.
"This is an outrage!" Arthur finally shouted, his voice cracking with panic as he abandoned the podium and tried to step backward. "This is a coordinated cyber-attack! A malicious smear campaign by an unstable individual! Security! Remove her!"
He pointed a shaking finger at Maya, his veneer of untouchable power completely shattered, exposing the desperate, cornered coward hiding underneath. But none of the security guards moved. They stood frozen, looking past Arthur at the federal marshals who were now mounting the stage steps.
"Arthur Sterling," the lead federal agent said, his voice deep and absolute as he pulled a folded document from his coat pocket. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, money laundering, embezzlement of nonprofit endowments, and obstruction of justice. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
The flashbulbs blinded the room as the cameras captured the exact moment the stainless-steel handcuffs clicked into place around Arthur’s wrists. The man who had once watched Maya writhe in pain at the bottom of a staircase, mocking her suffering and declaring her cries to be mere attention-seeking, was now powerless, his head bowed as federal agents escorted him off the stage in front of the entire elite class of New York society.
Maya stood at the podium, watching him go. She didn't feel triumph, nor did she feel hatred. She felt only a profound, liberating stillness—the quiet peace of a storm that had finally cleared, leaving the world washed clean in the morning light.
Eleanor walked up the stage steps behind her, handing her a folded piece of paper with a quiet, triumphant smile. "The federal attorney general’s office just issued an emergency freeze on all of Arthur’s personal and corporate assets. The board has already called an emergency vote. You have unanimous control of the foundation."

Maya looked down at the paper, then out across the ballroom where the crowd was slowly beginning to murmur, realizing they had just witnessed history. The nightmare was finally over.
