Chapter 5 - THE DIGITAL VAULT

The key to completely destroying a monster is finding where he hides his trophies.
While I was recovering in a private rehabilitation facility outside of Boulder, Eleanor Vance and her team of forensic investigators were digging deep into Daniel’s digital footprint.
"Men like Daniel don't just abuse," Eleanor explained to me during a afternoon session. "They control. And control requires record-keeping. They like to remind themselves of their power."
She brought in Marcus, a top-tier digital forensics specialist who had spent a week decrypting a cloud storage drive that the police had seized from Daniel’s personal laptop under the broad search warrant.
"We found it," Marcus said, opening a sleek black laptop and placing it on my tray table.
"Found what?" I asked, my heart racing.
"Daniel had a hidden partition on his personal drive, disguised as routine legal case files," Marcus said. "It contained audio recordings, security footage clips from your home security systems over the last three years, and meticulously organized spreadsheets."
My jaw dropped. "Spreadsheets?"
"He tracked you, Maya," Marcus pulled up a document. "He logged every argument, every time he punished you, your emotional reactions, and even the financial budgets he imposed on you to keep you dependent. But more importantly... he kept the security footage he pretended to delete."
Marcus pressed play on a file labeled 2024_08_14_LivingRoom.
The screen lit up with infrared footage of our townhouse living room from two years ago. I watched in horror as a younger, terrified version of myself retreated toward the couch while Daniel stood over me, screaming. The audio was crystal clear.
“You think anyone will ever believe you?” Daniel’s voice boomed through the laptop speakers. “Look at you! You’re a mess. I own the police in this town. I own the judges. If you ever try to leave me, I will make sure you spend the rest of your life in a psychiatric ward.”
Then, the video showed him grabbing my left arm and twisting it violently until an audible snap echoed through the room, followed by my blood-curdling scream.
I buried my face in my hands, sobbing uncontrollably. The trauma of that night rushed back over me like a tidal wave.
"Maya, look at me," Eleanor said gently, placing a firm, warm hand on my knee. "I know this is horrific to watch. But do you realize what this is?"
I looked up through my tears.
"This isn't just evidence of assault," Eleanor said, her eyes burning with righteous triumph. "This is a confession. This proves premeditation, systemic torture, and coercive control. This guarantees he doesn't just lose his license—he goes to state prison for a very long time."
Just then, Eleanor’s phone rang. She answered it, listened for a few moments, her expression shifting from intense concentration to cold satisfaction.
"That was the District Attorney," Eleanor said, hanging up. "They just upgraded the charges against Daniel. Attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault, witness tampering, and felony domestic abuse under the coercive control statutes."

"Is he in custody?" I asked.
"He was just arrested at his father’s estate in Aspen," Eleanor smiled. "They cuffed him in front of his entire neighborhood."
