Chapter 4 - THE COURT OF PUBLIC OPINION

The news broke seventy-two hours later, not in a quiet courtroom, but across every major news outlet and social media platform in the state of Colorado.

Eleanor Vance knew that fighting Daniel Sterling purely within the slow-moving legal system would allow his wealthy father, the retired judge, time to pull strings behind closed doors. So she unleashed a masterclass in strategic public exposure.

The headline of the Denver Post read:"PROMINENT ATTORNEY ACCUSED OF SYSTEMATIC DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AFTER GROUNDBREAKING 3D SCANS REVEAL YEARS OF SECRET ABUSE."

Attached to the article—leaked legally through court filings for an emergency restraining order—were side-by-side images: one was a stunning photograph of Daniel and me smiling at a charity gala; the other was the glowing 3D MRI render showing my shattered body, highlighting the calcified calluses of my past, unhealed wounds.

The internet erupted.

The contrast between the polished, handsome attorney and the terrifying skeletal evidence of his cruelty sent shockwaves through the legal community. The hashtag #JusticeForMaya began trending within hours.

In his corner office at Sterling & Howe LLP, Daniel was unraveling.

"What the hell is this, Daniel?!" his managing partner, Arthur Howe, slammed the newspaper onto the mahogany desk. "The District Attorney’s office just announced they’re convening a grand jury for first-degree felony assault and attempted manslaughter!"

Daniel sat behind his desk, his pristine hair slightly unkempt, a glass of bourbon in his hand at eleven in the morning. "It’s a smear campaign, Arthur! Maya is unhinged. She stumbled down the stairs. My mother testified to the police—"

"Your mother wasn't standing at the top of the stairs, Daniel!" Arthur shouted. "The medical examiners released a statement this morning. They have three independent orthopedic experts confirming that the angle of your footprint smudges on her clothing and the spinal trauma are completely inconsistent with a self-inflicted fall!"

"I can handle the DA," Daniel sneered, though his fingers trembled against the glass.

"No, you can't," Arthur said coldly. "The board met an hour ago. You’re suspended without pay, effective immediately. Security will escort you out of the building."

Daniel stood up, his face flushing deep red. "You can't do this to me! My father built this firm!"

"Your father’s reputation is currently burning to the ground along with yours," Arthur replied coldly. "Get your things and leave."

When Daniel walked out of the skyscraper, he was met by a wall of flashing cameras and shouting reporters.

"Mr. Sterling! Did you push your wife?" "Is it true she suffered years of hidden fractures?" "How do you respond to the MRI evidence?"

For the first time in his life, Daniel didn't have a slick answer. He ducked his head, shielding his face behind his designer briefcase as he shoved his way toward his valet-parked Porsche.

As he slammed the door shut, his phone buzzed. It was his father, Arthur Sterling.

"Father," Daniel breathed out, desperate. "I need you to call Judge Miller. We need to quash this indictment before—"

"Shut up, Daniel," the former judge’s voice was like ice. "Do you have any idea what you’ve done? The District Attorney isn't backing down. They’ve obtained a search warrant for the lake house... and for your private digital cloud accounts."

Daniel’s blood turned to liquid nitrogen. "My... my cloud accounts?"

May you like

"What did you put on those servers, Daniel?" his father demanded, his voice cracking with sudden dread. "Answer me!"

Daniel looked out the tinted window of his car at the sea of reporters. The arrogance that had sustained him for years finally cracked, revealing the raw terror beneath.
