Chapter 10 - Shadows in the Fog

The rain in Harbor Cove fell in soft, gentle streaks against the glass window of The Daily Bread.

It was 5:30 A.M. Claire was inside, wearing a flour-stained apron, lifting a tray of hot blueberry muffins out of the commercial oven. The bakery was warm and quiet, lit only by the golden glow of the interior lights.

Across the street, parked in the shadow of an abandoned brick warehouse, sat a black sedan.

Inside the car, Damian stared through a pair of high-powered binoculars.

His eyes scanned her face. She looked thinner than she had in Chicago, her cheekbones slightly more pronounced, but there was a color in her skin that had been absent for years. Her dark hair fell loosely across her shoulders, untamed by expensive stylists or hairpins.

As he watched, she laughed lightly at something Clara said, sliding a tray into the display window.

That laugh pierced Damian deeper than a blade to his ribs.

When was the last time she had laughed like that in his penthouse? Two years ago? Three?

He remembered how she used to wait up for him until 3:00 A.M., sitting on the edge of their massive leather sofa while he washed the blood of rival capos off his hands in the bathroom. He remembered how he had brushed off her concerns, telling her that his empire was what kept her safe and rich.

He had built a fortress of steel and blood, and inside it, he had allowed his wife to starve emotionally until she had to bury their son alone.

"Boss?" Marco whispered from the front seat. "Do you want me to go over and tell her you're here?"

"No," Damian said, his voice choking with an emotion he hadn't felt since he was a child.

"Why not? We've been looking for her for three months!"

"Look at her, Marco," Damian whispered, lowering the binoculars. His hand was shaking violently. "She's breathing. She's smiling. If I step across that street right now... I bring Chicago back into her life. I bring the blood, the guns, and the memory of the night Leo died."

May you like

Damian leaned his head back against the leather headrest, closing his eyes as tears quietly tracked down his dark, scarred cheeks.

"I just want to watch her for a little while," he whispered. "Just to know she's safe."
