Chapter 20 - A Lifetime of Repayment

Two years later.

The morning sun over Harbor Cove was golden and brilliant, breaking through the coastal fog.

On the grassy hill overlooking the turquoise ocean, a small toddler with dark curly hair and bright, inquisitive brown eyes giggled as she chased a butterfly through the wild clover.

"Careful, Maya!" Claire called out with a joyful laugh, leaning back on a picnic blanket laid across the grass.

Damian sat beside her, watching the little girl with an expression of such intense, protective tenderness that it transformed his entire face.

Maya was fourteen months old, born healthy, strong, and at full term in the very hospital wing they had built in Chicago.

When Maya tripped over a soft patch of clover, Damian was on his feet instantly. He didn't shout, nor did he panic. He scooped his daughter gently into his arms, lifting her high into the air as she burst into peals of baby laughter.

"Gotcha, little princess," Damian whispered softly, pulling her close against his chest, kissing her chubby cheek.

Claire walked over, standing beside them. She wrapped her arm around Damian's waist, resting her head against his shoulder as the ocean wind rustled through their hair.

Damian looked down at his wife, then down at his daughter, and finally up at the clear blue sky above.

He pulled a small silver pocket watch from his coat. Inside the lid were two photographs side-by-side: one was the tiny black-and-white footprint of Leo from Room 807; the other was a picture of Claire, Maya, and him smiling on the beach.

"Twelve hours and six minutes," Damian whispered softly, holding both his wife and daughter tight against his heart. "He gave us twelve hours to teach me how to be a father... and I will give you both the rest of my life."

Claire looked up into his eyes, seeing no trace of the feared boss of Chicago—only the husband who had finally come home.

She smiled, squeezed his hand, and together, they walked down the green hill toward the sea.
