Chapter 12 - The Price of Silence

Damian felt as though his lungs were collapsing.
"I tore down the syndicate," Damian blurted out, stepping closer, his voice frantic and unraveled. "I gave away the docks. I fired the capos. I cut off Alessia's family completely—she is gone, Claire! I swear to God, she is dead to me!"
Claire looked at him, her eyes soft with a profound, quiet pity.
"You still don't understand, do you?" she whispered.
"Understand what? Tell me! Tell me what to do, Claire! I'll buy this whole town! I'll build a hospital here! I'll spend every dollar I have!"
"It was never about Alessia, Damian," Claire said, taking a small step back. "Alessia was just the mirror. It was about the eight calls I made while I was bleeding on our bedroom floor. It was about the fact that your empire was always more important than your family."
"I was trying to build a world where our child would be safe!" Damian shouted, his chest heaving, tears spilling down his face in the damp fog.
"No," Claire said firmly. "You were building an empire for your own pride. Leo didn't need shipping docks or armed bodyguards, Damian. He needed his father to hold his hand for five minutes before he died."
Damian dropped to his knees right there on the wet cobblestones.
The feared mafia king of Chicago, the man who had ordered executions with a casual nod, knelt in the mud at his wife's feet, weeping openly into his hands.
"I'm sorry..." he sobbed, his voice breaking into agonizing pieces. "I'm so sorry, Claire... Please... just let me fix it... please..."
Claire stood over him for a long moment. She reached down, gently touched his hair for a brief, fleeting second, and then pulled her hand back.

"Some things cannot be fixed, Damian," she said quietly. "You can keep your millions. You can keep your power. But you cannot have me."
She turned and walked into the fog, leaving him kneeling alone in the rain.
