Chapter 15 - Vigil by the Bedside

The harsh red lights of the ambulance vehicle flashed rhythmically against the rain-slicked walls of the Knox County General Hospital.
Inside the intensive care surgical waiting room, Claire sat on a hard vinyl chair, her hands covered in dried dark blood. Her own blood? No—Damian’s.
Marco burst through the double doors, panting, his suit jacket torn. Behind him stood four local police officers who had been briefed on the situation.
"Mrs. Moretti!" Marco breathed, dropping to one knee before her. "Are you alright?"
Claire looked up, her face pale, her eyes wide with shock. "He took the blast for me, Marco... He didn't even try to dodge it. He just covered me."
"That’s who he is when it comes to you, Claire," Marco said quietly, his head bowed. "He always was. He was just too blind and arrogant to realize it until he lost everything."
The doors of the operating room swung open. The lead surgeon stepped out, pulling down his mask.
"Is he alive?" Claire asked, standing up immediately despite the sharp ache in her abdomen.
"He survived the surgery," the doctor reported solemnly. "We removed seven pieces of lead buckshot from his shoulder and upper back. One fragment passed less than half an inch from his spinal cord. He lost a massive amount of blood, and he's currently in a medically induced coma. The next forty-eight hours will decide everything."
For two days and two nights, Claire didn't leave Room 402.
She sat on the vinyl chair beside Damian’s bed, listening to the rhythmic, mechanical beep... beep... beep... of his heart monitor.
It was the exact same sound she had listened to in the NICU three months ago while holding their dying son.
She looked at Damian’s pale face, stripped of his cold authority, surrounded by clear IV tubes and breathing monitors.
For the first time in five years, she saw him not as the terrifying mafia boss of Chicago, nor as the neglectful husband who had betrayed her in Capri. She saw a deeply broken man who had willingly traded his own life to shield hers from the consequences of his own past.

She reached out, her fingers gently clasping his cold, scarred hand.
"Live, Damian," she whispered softly into the quiet room. "If you want to earn forgiveness... you have to live."
