Chapter 7 - The Blood Stain on the Throne

In Chicago, the winter had turned vicious.
Inside the glass-walled penthouse conference room overlooking the dark waters of Lake Michigan, six senior capos of the Moretti family sat around a heavy walnut table. The air was thick with anger and tobacco smoke.
At the head of the table sat Antonio Moretti, Damian’s ruthless cousin, his boots kicked up onto the mahogany surface.
"He's lost his mind," Antonio sneered, flipping through a file of uncollected extortion debts. "The Russians burned three of our trucks in Cicero yesterday, and Damian didn't even show up for the briefing. He's driving around New England like a stray dog looking for a runaway broad!"
"Watch your tongue, Antonio," Marco said, standing near the frosted glass doors with his arms crossed over his chest. "Damian is still the head of this family."
"Not if he doesn't take care of business, he isn't!" growled Capo Lorenzo, slamming a heavy fist onto the table. "Our guys on the street are getting picked off! The federal prosecutors are smelling blood in the water! If Damian won't protect the throne, somebody else has to step up!"
The heavy double doors swept open.
The temperature in the room seemed to plummet ten degrees in an instant.
Damian walked into the room. He didn't wear his tailored Italian suit; instead, he wore a simple black turtleneck and a long dark trench coat covered in melted snow. His eyes were dark, sunken, and hollow, but the raw, lethal intensity radiating from him made every man at the table freeze instantly.
Damian walked to the head of the table. He didn't say a word. He simply grabbed Antonio by the back of his hair, slammed his face into the walnut table with a sickening crack, and drew a cold silver barrel to the base of Antonio's skull.
Antonio gasped, blood spilling from his crushed nose onto the mahogany.
"Say it again," Damian whispered, his voice smooth, soft, and terrifyingly calm. "Say her name again, Antonio."
The room was deathly quiet. None of the five armed lieutenants dared to draw their weapons against Damian.
"I... I was just talking about family business, Damian..." Antonio choked out through the blood.
"The family business is fine," Damian said, leaning down close to Antonio's ear. "Starting today, I am liquidating sixty percent of our local assets. We are handing the shipping docks to the city council, and we are shutting down the Cicero warehouses."
The capos gasped in horror. "Damian, that’s hundreds of millions!" Lorenzo shouted.
"I don't care," Damian said, releasing Antonio, who crumpled into his chair holding his bleeding face. Damian pulled a white silk handkerchief from his pocket, wiped his hands, and looked across the room.

"I am burning down every piece of this syndicate until there is nothing left for my enemies to target. And then, I am leaving Chicago."
He turned on his heel and walked out, leaving his inner circle stunned into total silence.
