Chapter 18 - The Memorial Garden

Six months passed.

The summer sun shone brightly over Chicago as a large crowd gathered outside the newly constructed Leo Moretti Children's Hospital Wing near downtown.

Claire stood near the front of the marble courtyard, wearing a simple navy blue dress.

Beside her, standing tall without his cane but carrying the quiet, humble posture of a man who had left his darkness behind, was Damian.

He no longer wore three-thousand-dollar suits. He wore a plain navy jacket, his dark hair cut short, his eyes clear and calm.

The mayor of Chicago cut the red ribbon, announcing to the gathered applause: "Today, we open the largest state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit in the Midwest, equipped with fifty specialized high-risk incubators, ensuring that no premature child in this city goes without immediate life-saving care."

The crowd applauded warmly.

Claire walked away from the podium, leading Damian around the back of the building into a quiet, secluded courtyard surrounded by white rose bushes and stone benches.

In the center of the garden stood a small marble statue of a mother's hand gently cradling a miniature, sleeping infant.

At the base of the statue was an inscription carved into the gold plate:

In Memory of Leo MorettiWho lived twelve hours and six minutes,So that thousands of others might live a lifetime.

Damian stood before the statue, his breath coming in slow, heavy hitches. He reached out, his trembling fingers tracing the carved letters of his son's name.

He dropped to one knee, putting his head down against the cold marble base.

"I'm here, Leo..." Damian whispered into the quiet garden, his shoulders shaking with silent sobs. "Daddy's here..."

Claire stepped forward. She didn't stay back. She knelt beside Damian on the green grass, wrapping her arms around his broad shoulders, pulling his head against her neck as he wept for the son he had lost, and the man he had finally become.
