Chapter 11 - The Fracture of the Family

By 4:30 PM that afternoon, Richard Vance officially withdrew Diane’s lawsuit.
The news spread through the extended family like wildfire. The narrative that Diane had built—that she was an innocent victim of a ruthless son—collapsed instantly when Ethan’s brother, Marcus, finally saw the Ring camera footage and read the notarized legal documents.
That evening, Marcus drove to our house in Dublin.
When Ethan opened the door, Marcus didn't come in with fists raised like he had weeks before. He walked in looking utterly defeated.
"Ethan..." Marcus said softly, sitting at our kitchen island. "I saw the video. Vance’s assistant leaked the transcript to me."
Ethan poured his brother a glass of water. "She lied to you, Marcus. She's been lying to all of us for decades."
Marcus put his head in his hands. "She told me you were trying to steal my inheritance. She told me Dad hated me because I was... because of who my real father was."
Ethan placed a hand on his brother’s shoulder. "Dad doesn't hate you, Marcus. Dad was terrified of Mom. She used that secret to keep him under her thumb, and she used it to make you feel like an outsider so you'd rely entirely on her."
Tears streamed down Marcus's face. "I gave her fifteen thousand dollars last year, Ethan! She told me she needed money for her heart medication! I took out a personal loan to help her!"
Ethan took a deep breath. "She didn't use it for medication, Marcus. She used it to pay off Natalie’s credit cards and keep up appearances at the country club."

Marcus slammed his fist lightly against the counter, realizing the sheer scope of their mother's manipulation. "What happens now?"
"The thirty-day eviction notice expires in ten days," Ethan said firmly. "I am selling the house. Dad is moving into a quiet townhouse near us. But Mom and Natalie have to figure out their own lives."
