Chapter 18 - The Sister's Redemption

Two months after the press conference, Natalie called Ethan asking to meet for coffee. Ethan invited her to a quiet cafe near our house, and asked me to join them.

When we sat down, Natalie looked completely different. The designer clothes and expensive makeup were gone. She was wearing a simple work uniform from a local bakery where she was working forty hours a week.

"I brought this," Natalie said, sliding a small envelope across the table to Ethan.

Inside was a check for $500.

"What's this?" Ethan asked.

"It's the first installment," Natalie said softly, looking us in the eye with genuine shame. "I calculated how much money you sent that went directly to my car and credit cards. It comes to roughly thirty-eight thousand dollars. I know it will take me years to pay it back, but I want to pay every single cent."

Ethan stared at his sister, surprised. "Natalie..."

"I was wrong," she continued, her voice trembling. "Mom raised me to believe that we were entitled to everything, and that using people was just how life worked. Seeing what she did at your press conference... seeing how she tried to destroy you... it woke me up. I don't want to be like her."

She turned to me. "Claire... I am so sorry for how I treated you. You're a wonderful mother, and you didn't deserve a second of the abuse we put you through."

I looked at her closely. For the first time, I saw real sincerity in her eyes.

"Thank you, Natalie," I said gently. "That means a lot."

Ethan pushed the check back across the table. "Keep the money, Natalie. Use it to pay off your debts and get your own place. If you're truly committed to changing your life, that's payment enough."
