Chapter 13 - Rebuilding the Foundation

Spring arrived in Ohio, bringing warmth and fresh bloom to the trees surrounding our suburban home.
With the estate sold to a young medical executive family for $680,000, Ethan used the proceeds to establish a secure retirement trust for his father, Arthur. Arthur moved into a beautiful, quiet single-story condo just five minutes from our home, where he spent his afternoons gardening and reading books to Mia.
For the first time in his life, Arthur looked peaceful. The lines of tension on his face had softened, and he re-established a healthy, honest relationship with both Ethan and Marcus.
Marcus, having cut ties with his mother’s toxic influence, began attending family dinners at our house every Sunday. He apologized deeply to me for his initial hostility, and Mia quickly took a liking to her "Uncle Marcus," who brought her stuffed animals every weekend.
Meanwhile, news reached us through mutual acquaintances about Diane and Natalie.

Without Ethan’s monthly checks or the luxury mansion to hide behind, Diane had been forced to move into a tiny, two-bedroom rented apartment on the outer edges of the city. Natalie had taken a job as a real estate receptionist and was struggling to pay rent for her own small apartment.
Neither of them reached out to us, and for the first time in seven years, our lives felt completely quiet and safe.
