Chapter 7 - The Father's Secret

Late Thursday night, a quiet knock came at our front door.

I looked through the peephole and saw Ethan's father, Arthur. He looked frail, his shoulders stooped under a dark brown coat. He was standing alone in the snow.

Ethan opened the door. "Dad?"

Arthur stepped inside, shaking snow off his boots. He looked at me, his eyes full of shame. "Claire... I am so sorry for what happened in my home. I was a coward for not stopping Diane. I've been a coward for a very long time."

I didn't say anything, but I brought him a warm glass of water. We sat in the living room while Mia slept soundly upstairs.

"Arthur, why didn't you ever stand up to her?" Ethan asked gently.

Arthur stared into his glass. "Because your mother holds something over me, Ethan. Something she's used to control me for thirty years."

Ethan and I exchanged a sharp glance. "What are you talking about?"

Arthur pulled a yellowed envelope from his inner coat pocket and laid it on the coffee table.

"Thirty years ago, before you were born, your mother had an affair," Arthur revealed, his voice barely a whisper. "When she got pregnant with Marcus, she wasn't sure who the father was. She made me sign a secret agreement—a postnuptial contract—stipulating that if I ever divorced her or exposed her secret, she would take full control of the family estate and cut me off entirely."

Ethan frowned. "Dad... Marcus is forty years old. You've lived in fear of a rumor for decades?"

"It's not just a rumor," Arthur said, his eyes welling with tears. "Marcus isn't my biological son. And Diane has used that secret to manipulate Marcus his entire life into hating you, Ethan. She told Marcus that I was the monster who neglected him, while she was the protector."

The grand puzzle of the dysfunctional family finally clicked into place. Diane was a master manipulator who had spent decades keeping her husband terrified, her eldest son brainwashed, her daughter dependent, and her youngest son—Ethan—acting as the secret financial machine that funded her lie.

"Dad," Ethan said, reaching across the table to grab his father's shaking hands. "You don't have to protect her lies anymore. The house is mine. The money is mine. You don't have to stay in that toxic house."

Arthur wiped a tear from his cheek. "She's planning something terrible, Ethan. She called a family lawyer yesterday. She's trying to sue you for fraud, claiming you coerced me into signing the house over six years ago."

Ethan smiled cold, fearless smile. "Let her try."
