Chapter 4 - The Escalation

Three days passed in tense quiet, but the calm was an illusion.

On Thursday afternoon, while Ethan was at his office and Mia was down for her nap, a loud knock rattled our front door.

I looked through the side window panel and felt my stomach drop. Standing on my porch was Diane, dressed in her expensive wool coat, accompanied by Ethan’s older brother, Marcus, who lived two hours away in Cleveland.

I unlocked the door but left the security chain engaged.

"Open this door right now, Claire!" Diane commanded, her eyes red-rimmed but blazing with fury. She had heavy foundation slapped over her face, but she looked completely unhinged.

"You are not welcome here, Diane," I said through the cracked door. "Leave, or I'm calling the police."

Marcus stepped into view, his face twisted in anger. "Claire, stop being dramatic! Mom is hurt! Ethan signed legal papers behind her back years ago and tricked our father! You influenced him to do this!"

"Ethan saved your parents from sleeping on the street six years ago!" I snapped back, my voice remarkably steady despite the adrenaline pouring through my veins. "He paid their bills while you were living large in Cleveland ignoring them! And your mother hit me in front of my child!"

"You deserved far worse, you little opportunist!" Diane shrieked, slamming her palm against the heavy wooden door. "You turned my son against his blood family! You forged those documents! I built that house!"

"Mom, calm down," Marcus warned, looking around the quiet neighborhood as a neighbor across the street slowed down while walking his dog.

"I will not calm down!" Diane spat. "Tell Ethan that if he doesn't tear up that eviction notice by tomorrow, I am going to the press! I am going to destroy his software firm's reputation! Everyone in Columbus will know he kicked his elderly mother into the street!"

"Go ahead," a cold voice spoke from behind the porch bushes.

Ethan was walking up the driveway, holding a briefcase. He had just arrived home from work.

Marcus turned around. "Ethan, thank God. Look at what your wife is doing—"

"I gave the legal notice to my attorney, Marcus," Ethan said, stepping onto the porch and standing directly beside me. "Claire didn't write it. I did. You have twenty-seven days left to move her things out."

Diane looked at her son as if he had transformed into a monster. "Ethan... I am your mother!"

"A mother doesn't assault her son's wife," Ethan responded coldly. "Get off my property before I have the sheriff remove you for trespassing."
