Chapter 20 - A New Christmas

Christmas Day arrived once again.
This time, there was no grand mansion, no embroidered tablecloths hiding toxic secrets, and no terrified silence waiting for an outburst.
Our home was filled with the warm scent of cinnamon, pine, and roasted turkey. Fairy lights sparkled on our Christmas tree in the living room.
Around our dining table sat a very different family:
Ethan sat at the head of the table, smiling warmly. Beside him was his father, Arthur, laughing as he helped three-year-old Mia wear a festive paper crown. Marcus was sitting next to Natalie, who had brought a homemade apple pie she baked herself at the bakery.
"Alright, everyone," Ethan said, standing up and raising his glass of sparkling cider. "I'd like to make a toast."
Everyone quieted down, looking up at him.
"One year ago, our family was broken, built on secrets and fear," Ethan said, looking down at me with deep love in his eyes. "But sometimes, things have to fall apart completely so that the right things can be built in their place."
He raised his glass higher. "To honesty, to healing, and to true family."
"To true family!" everyone chimed in, clinking their glasses together.
Mia giggled and accidentally knocked over her small glass of milk. White milk spilled across the tablecloth.
The entire room went quiet for a fraction of a second.
Then, Arthur burst into a warm laugh. Marcus reached for a napkin, smiling. Natalie handed Mia a towel, tapping her nose gently.
"It's okay, sweetie!" Ethan laughed, leaning down to kiss Mia's forehead. "It's just milk."
I looked around the table at the smiling faces, the laughter, and the overwhelming feeling of peace. The blow that had shattered our world a year ago had ultimately freed us all.
I took Ethan's hand under the table, squeezed it tight, and smiled.
