Chapter 11 - The Unforeseen Inspection

The morning mist still clung to the peaks of the Blue Ridge, casting a silvery sheen over the dew-kissed grass of the farmhouse. Naomi stood at the kitchen counter, her hands deftly shaping whole-grain dough into small, circular pastries while the rich aroma of roasted coffee beans drifted through the room. Two years had stripped away the pale, fragile ghost of Miami that she once was, replacing her with a woman whose posture was unyielding, her eyes sharp and luminous, her skin kissed by mountain sun.

A heavy knock echoed from the front door, breaking the quiet tranquility of the morning.

Naomi paused, wiping her flour-dusted hands on a linen dish towel. Lucas, who had been sitting at the rustic wooden dining table reviewing architectural sketches for a local community center, looked up, his brow furrowed in mild annoyance. Visitors were rare this deep in the mountains, especially this early.

"Stay here," Lucas murmured, standing up and rolling his flannel sleeves slightly. "I'll see who it is."

He strode toward the heavy oak door and pulled it open. Standing on the porch was a figure entirely out of place in the rugged mountain terrain. A man dressed in a bespoke, charcoal-gray Brioni suit, his Italian leather shoes pristine despite the dusty gravel driveway, stood with a briefcase clutched tightly in his hand. His silver-streaked hair was meticulously styled, and his expression was a mix of corporate authority and lingering hesitation.

It was Arthur Sterling, Julian’s senior legal counsel and the man who had once looked down his nose at Naomi during every boardroom meeting in downtown Miami.

"Mr. Sterling," Lucas said, his voice dropping an octave, instantly blocking the doorway with his broad frame. "You're a long way from Brickell. And unless you brought a county building permit I haven't heard about, you're trespassing."

Arthur swallowed hard, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses as he looked past Lucas’s shoulder into the bright, airy kitchen. "Mr. Vance. I’m not here on legal business for the firm. I’m here… personally. And I need to speak with Mrs. Vance—with Naomi."

Naomi stepped around the corner, her expression an impenetrable mask of cool indifference. She didn't flinch. She didn't drop her gaze. Two years ago, the mere sight of anyone tied to Julian’s empire would have sent her heart racing into her throat. Now, looking at Arthur Sterling felt like looking at a piece of discarded trash left on the side of a highway.

"Let him speak, Lucas," Naomi said smoothly, her voice carrying an effortless authority that made Arthur visibly flinch.

Lucas hesitated, casting a protective glance at Naomi before stepping aside, though he remained close enough to block any sudden movements. "You've got five minutes before I carry you off this porch, counselor."

Arthur stepped inside, immediately looking overwhelmed by the smell of baking bread and the rustic warmth of the farmhouse. He set his briefcase on a side chair and cleared his throat nervously. "Naomi... or should I say, Ms. Vance. I never expected to find you out here. The private investigators Julian hired spent eighteen months looking in Europe, in New York, in South America. They never thought to look in a remote mountain town in North Carolina."

"Julian is still looking?" Naomi asked, her tone dangerously calm as she poured herself a cup of coffee, ignoring the guest entirely until she took a slow, deliberate sip. "How amusing. Though I suppose when a man’s empire is crumbling around his ears, he tends to grasp at whatever phantom left him standing in the ruins."

Arthur’s eyes widened slightly. "You know, then? You know what happened to him after you disappeared?"

"I don't care," Naomi said flatly, her eyes flashing with a cold fire. "And if you think I care, you've wasted a very expensive plane ticket and a pair of ruined shoes."

"He lost everything, Naomi," Arthur whispered, stepping closer, desperate to make her understand the gravity of his words. "The corporate board ousted him six months ago. The investors pulled out after the massive scandal with Chloe Vance—she embezzled millions through a shell company and fled to the Cayman Islands. Julian took the fall legally because he signed off on her fraudulent asset transfers. He was indicted last week. He’s facing federal prison time."

Naomi didn't blink. The news washed over her like cold water—refreshing, deserved, but ultimately irrelevant. The man who had humiliated her while she was carrying his child, the man who had chosen a manipulative parasite over his own flesh and blood, had finally reaped what he sowed.

"Karma is a patient architect," Naomi said softly, setting her coffee cup down with a sharp *clink* against the wood. "And as for Julian... tell him that the ghost he abandoned is long dead. There is nothing left here for him."
