Chapter 26 - The Quiet Morning After

The morning sun washed over the Blue Ridge Mountains in shades of gold and amber, painting the sky with the quiet promise of a brand-new season.
Inside the farmhouse kitchen, the house was wonderfully, peacefully silent. Lily was still fast asleep in her crib upstairs, breathing softly. Lucas was standing by the stove, flipping pancakes on a cast-iron skillet, humming an old tune under his breath.
Naomi sat at the wooden dining table, a steaming mug of coffee between her hands, watching the sunlight stream through the windowpane. On the center of the table lay the final, certified copy of the land trust deed, bearing the official state seal. No mortgages, no corporate liens, no hidden clauses. Just clean, absolute ownership of a future they had bled, sweat, and fought to build.
Lucas slid a plate piled high with golden pancakes and fresh mountain blueberries in front of her, leaning down to press a soft kiss to the top of her head. "Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Vance-to-be," he whispered playfully.
Naomi paused, looking up at him with a raised eyebrow. "Vance-to-be? Did you just propose marriage while flipping breakfast?"
Lucas grinned, pulling out the chair opposite her and sitting down with his own plate. "I’m testing the waters. Though after everything we’ve survived, I figured a formal ring on a mountain peak during sunset might be slightly more romantic than a kitchen table."
Naomi laughed, the sound bright and clear in the quiet morning air. She reached across the table, tapping her coffee mug against his. "You’ve got a point. But for the record... I love this kitchen table."
"Me too," Lucas said softly, his eyes softening as he looked at her. "Everything we need is right here. No boardrooms, no offshore accounts, no Miami skyscrapers. Just us, Lily, and this valley."
There was a sudden small thump from upstairs, followed by the familiar, adorable cooing of a toddler waking up from her morning nap.
Lucas smiled, standing up immediately. "I'll get her."
As Lucas walked toward the stairs, Naomi leaned back in her chair, taking a slow sip of her coffee. Her mind drifted briefly back to the past—to the sterile hospital rooms in Miami, the freezing rain the night she walked out on Julian, the absolute terror of not knowing how she was going to survive.
If someone had told her back then that she would end up here—surrounded by love, safety, and a community of people who would lay down their lives to protect her—she never would have believed it. But the past didn't define her anymore. It was just the foundation upon which everything beautiful had been built.
Footsteps padded down the wooden stairs, and a moment later, Lucas walked back into the kitchen carrying Lily on his shoulders. The little girl was wearing yellow pajamas with little ducklings on them, giggling uncontrollably as she pulled gently on Lucas’s hair.
"Look who’s ready for pancakes!" Lucas announced.
Naomi stood up, walking over to lift Lily out of her father's arms and pressing a soft kiss to her rosy cheek. "Good morning, my sweet girl. Are you ready for the best day of your life?"
May you like
Lily clapped her hands together, shouting a happy baby-gibberish that made both Naomi and Lucas laugh out loud.
