Chapter 21 - The Asheville Arrival

The morning mist was still clinging to the timberlines of the Blue Ridge Mountains when the heavy sedan turned off the state highway and crunched onto the unpaved access road leading toward Naomi’s sanctuary. Inside the warm farmhouse, the smell of roasted coffee beans and cinnamon was thick, but the atmosphere had instantly frozen the moment Victor Vance tossed that weathered dossier onto the wooden porch steps.
Naomi stared down at the documents. Her fingers, usually steady when holding her daughter Lily or drafting architectural blueprints, trembled slightly against the ceramic mug she held. The top photograph in the dossier wasn’t Julian. Julian was sitting in a federal penitentiary cell three states away, wearing an orange jumpsuit and staring at concrete walls, paying the price for a corporate fraud empire he had built on greed and ego.
No, the face staring up from the paper belonged to Arthur Sterling—a man Naomi hadn't thought about in over four years, a venture capitalist from Boston who supposedly operated entirely out of New York and London.
"Arthur Sterling," Naomi whispered, the name tasting like cold ash on her tongue.
Lucas stepped off the porch, his boots crunching on the gravel as he stood between Victor and the front door. His jaw was clenched, a muscle ticking violently in his cheek. He didn't trust Victor Vance, and with good reason. Victor was a Vance by blood, even if he had spent decades at war with Julian’s branch of the family. Dynasties like the Vances didn't just walk away; they played long games.
"Explain yourself, Victor," Lucas demanded, his voice low and dangerous, carrying the weight of a man who had fought too hard to protect his current peace to let outsiders shatter it now. "Why is Arthur Sterling's name in an Asheville transit log? How do you even know he's here?"
Victor let out a dry, rasping laugh that turned into a cough. He gripped his ebony cane tighter, leaning his weight onto it as he looked past Lucas to meet Naomi's eyes. Naomi had walked out of Miami a broken, heavily pregnant woman running for her life; she was now a fierce, self-made entrepreneur and a protective mother. She wasn't easily intimidated anymore.
"Arthur didn't come here for scenery, Lucas," Victor said, his breath pluming in the crisp mountain air. "He came because Julian was never the master architect of the Vance Group. Julian was a figurehead—greedy, arrogant, and easily manipulated. Arthur Sterling funded the initial hostile takeover of Naomi’s family land in Florida five years ago. When Julian took the fall, Arthur quietly absorbed the remaining assets through shell companies based right here in North Carolina."
Naomi stepped out onto the porch, leaving Lily sleeping safely in her crib inside. Her face was pale, but her eyes burned with a cold, righteous fury. "They’re trying to take the valley," she said, her voice chillingly calm.
"Not just the valley, my dear," Victor said, stepping back slightly as Lucas glared at him. "They want the patented timber rights, the mineral surveys your grandfather left behind, and most importantly, they want to invalidate the land deeds you legally secured last year. Arthur is launching a multi-million-dollar eminent domain petition through a corrupt local county board. They plan to claim your entire cooperative is an environmental hazard."
Lucas cursed under his breath, turning to Naomi. "If they get a judge to slap a preservation or hazard lien on the land, the entire cooperative freezes. All our supply chains, the organic farms, the community housing—everything we built could be tied up in litigation for a decade."
Naomi looked down at the dossier. Inside were property maps marked with red ink, outlining every single acre she had fought tooth and nail to reclaim. Arthur Sterling hadn't forgotten about her. In the twisted, cutthroat world of corporate America, a loss wasn't a lesson; it was a delay. And Arthur Sterling never liked to lose.
"He thinks I'm still that terrified pregnant girl in Miami who had nothing left," Naomi said, her voice dropping an octave as she closed the dossier and picked it up. She looked at Lucas, and in that single glance, an unspoken pact was sealed. They had survived Julian’s betrayal, the corporate smear campaigns, and the wilderness of starting over. They weren't about to let some eastern-seaboard billionaire steal their future without a war.
"What do we do, Naomi?" Lucas asked, his anger shifting into absolute, unwavering loyalty.

"We don't wait for his lawyers to serve us," Naomi said, walking past Lucas down the steps until she stood face-to-face with Victor Vance. "We go to Asheville. And we invite Mr. Sterling to a meeting he won't be able to ignore."
