Chapter 15 - The Unexpected Visitor at the Gate

The morning frost had turned the grass into a sparkling carpet of white diamonds. Inside the farmhouse, the wood stove was crackling merrily, radiating a cozy warmth that filled the kitchen with the smell of brewing coffee and cinnamon rolls.

Little Elena, now just past her third birthday, was sitting at the low wooden table coloring furiously inside a drawing book with bright red and blue crayons, chattering happily to herself.

Naomi was standing by the window, watching the mist rise off the valley, when a black SUV—completely out of place on the rugged mountain roads—slowly turned up the winding gravel driveway and came to a stop near the front porch.

Naomi’s breath caught in her throat for a fraction of a second. Not out of fear, but out of sheer, unadulterated annoyance.

The door of the SUV opened, and a man stepped out. He was dressed in a heavy charcoal overcoat, his hair disheveled, his face gaunt and pale. It wasn't Julian—he was still sitting in a federal holding facility awaiting sentencing.

It was Richard Vance, Julian’s older brother and the former managing partner of Vance Holdings—a man who had always treated Naomi like an inferior employee rather than a sister-in-law.

Lucas stepped out from the mudroom, wiping his hands on a towel, his expression instantly hardening as he saw who had emerged from the vehicle. Without a word to Naomi, Lucas grabbed his heavy winter jacket from the hook, opened the front door, and stepped out onto the porch, blocking the steps.

Richard stopped at the bottom of the steps, looking up at Lucas with an expression of desperate humility that didn't suit his usually arrogant features.

"Lucas," Richard called out, his voice cracking slightly in the cold mountain air. "I need to talk to you. And... I need to talk to Naomi."

"You have about thirty seconds to turn that rental car around and head back down the mountain before I help you accelerate the trip," Lucas said coldly, his voice carrying an unmistakable threat.

"I'm not here to cause trouble, Lucas!" Richard pleaded, holding up his hands defensively. "The firm is gone. The family name is completely ruined. Julian has been indicted, and the federal prosecutors are looking at expanding the conspiracy charges to anyone who signed off on the subsidiary shell companies between 2021 and 2022."

Naomi quietly opened the front door and stepped out onto the porch beside Lucas. She pulled her woolen wrap tightly around her shoulders, her eyes fixed on Richard with chilling detachment.

"If you're here to ask for character references, Richard, you're knocking on the wrong door," Naomi said, her voice cutting through the cold morning air like a razor. "You sat at our dinner table while Julian paraded his mistress in front of me. You watched me pack my bags while six months pregnant and told me I was 'exaggerating the situation' for dramatic effect."

Richard flushed deeply, lowering his gaze to the wooden floorboards of the porch. "I was wrong, Naomi. We were all blind. Julian’s arrogance blinded the entire family. But... but I'm not here for a reference."

"Then why *are* you here?" Naomi demanded, stepping closer to the edge of the porch.

Richard swallowed hard, pulling a sealed envelope from his coat pocket. "Julian didn't just ruin himself. Before the federal receivers seized his remaining personal effects, he left a letter with his defense team. It's addressed... to you, Naomi. And to his daughter."
