Chapter 20 - The Echo on the Wind

The morning sun broke over the Blue Ridge peaks with a blinding brilliance, burning away the last wisps of the overnight valley fog. The air was crisp, scented with sweet pine and fresh morning rain, and the wraparound porch was bathed in a golden, inviting warmth.
Naomi sat in her rocking chair, a steaming mug of coffee in one hand and her sketchbook open on her lap. Little Elena was already outside, chasing a brightly colored butterfly across the dewy meadow with joyful shrieks that echoed gently against the mountain walls.
Lucas stepped out onto the porch, carrying a freshly sanded wooden birdhouse he had spent the past week crafting in his workshop. He set it down by the railing, walked over to Naomi, and leaned down to press a soft kiss against her lips.
"Morning, beautiful," Lucas murmured, smiling as he pulled up the chair beside her.
"Morning, builder," Naomi replied, her eyes bright and content.
Just as Lucas reached for his coffee mug, a sharp, unusual sound broke the peaceful morning quiet.
Down at the foot of the long, winding gravel driveway, near the main property gate, a sleek, unfamiliar luxury sedan had just pulled to a halt. The engine idled softly, its low hum carrying up through the trees.
Lucas’s smile faded instantly. His posture stiffened, his eyes narrowing as he stood up from his chair, instantly placing himself between the driveway and the porch where Naomi and Elena sat.
Naomi didn't flinch. She slowly closed her sketchbook, placed her coffee mug on the small wooden table, and stood up beside Lucas, her expression calm, unyielding, and completely unafraid.
The driver’s side door of the sedan opened slowly. A figure stepped out into the morning sunlight—someone wearing an expensive, weather-worn trench coat, looking older, thinner, and carrying a small leather briefcase that looked strangely out of place in the rugged mountain terrain.
It wasn't Julian. He was locked away behind federal prison walls serving his twelve-year sentence.
Instead, the man walking slowly up the gravel path toward the farmhouse porch was someone Naomi hadn't seen or heard from since the very day she walked out of her Miami life—someone who held the final, hidden piece of the puzzle regarding why Julian’s empire had truly fallen from the inside out.
It was Victor Vance, Julian’s estranged uncle and the secretive patriarch of the original family dynasty, who had supposedly vanished into self-imposed exile in Europe five years prior.
Victor stopped ten feet from the base of the porch, leaning heavily on a polished ebony cane. He looked up at Naomi, his eyes holding a heavy, complicated mixture of remorse, respect, and urgent warning.
"Naomi," Victor’s gravelly voice echoed across the quiet meadow, cutting through the morning breeze. "I didn't come to beg for forgiveness like my nephew. I came to warn you... because what Julian destroyed was only the beginning of what is still coming for this valley."
Lucas’s hand tightened into a fist by his side, his eyes locked on the old man with immediate suspicion. "Step back, Victor. You've brought enough poison into our lives already."
Victor held up a trembling hand, shaking his head slowly as he pulled a thick, weathered dossier from his trench coat pocket and tossed it onto the first step of the porch.
"I'm not the poison, Lucas," Victor said softly, his eyes never leaving Naomi’s steady gaze. "I'm the antidote. And the people who engineered Julian's downfall from behind the scenes... have just landed in Asheville."

Naomi stared down at the dossier resting on the wooden step, her heart skipping a single beat as the morning wind blew open the front page, revealing a set of names and photographs that made the blood run cold in her veins.
