Chapter 23 - The SEC Investigation

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. For ten agonizing seconds, the only sound was the low, distant hum of the building's climate control system.

Arthur Sterling’s fingers remained frozen over the edge of his coffee mug. His eyes, usually sharp and calculating, darted down to the leather-bound folder resting on his desk. He hadn't touched it yet, but the look on Evelyn’s face—she had managed to sneak a glance at the top sheet exposed by Naomi’s toss—was enough to send a cold shiver down his spine.

Evelyn swallowed hard, her professional composure cracking for the first time. "Mr. Sterling... you need to look at that."

Slowly, Arthur reached out. He opened the folder. The first page was a bank routing statement from an offshore account in the Cayman Islands. The second page was a signed wire transfer authorization dated four years ago—the exact period when Julian Vance’s empire was secretly being hollowed out from the inside.

And at the bottom of the wire transfer, authorizing the transfer of stolen Vance Global corporate assets into a shell company controlled by Sterling Holdings, was Arthur Sterling’s own signature.

Arthur’s face drained of color, the sophisticated veneer instantly melting away to reveal a cornered predator. He slammed the folder shut, his hands shaking slightly. "This... this is fabricated. These are forged bank records. You have no jurisdiction, no proof of origin—"

"The originals are currently sitting on the desk of the Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina," Naomi interrupted, her voice entirely devoid of fear. She straightened up, buttoning her jacket with quiet precision. "Along with sworn affidavits from three of your former mid-level compliance officers who finally decided that prison wasn't worth covering up your tax evasion."

Arthur stood up so fast his leather chair rolled back and crashed against the glass wall. "You think you can trap me with blackmail? I have ten lawyers on retainer who will tie this up in court until you’re bankrupt!"

"Try it," Lucas spoke up for the first time, his voice a low, rumbling threat that made Arthur’s security guards instinctively tense. "Try filing a single injunction in this state, and we’ll release the second dossier to every financial publication from Wall Street to London. Your investors will pull every penny out before the bell rings tomorrow morning."

Victor Vance stepped forward, tapping his cane sharply against the marble floor. "You always were too greedy, Arthur. You thought Julian was the only one playing the game. But you forgot rule number one of the old families: we eat our own when they step out of line."

Arthur glared at Naomi, his chest heaving with suppressed rage. He had spent thirty years building an untouchable reputation as a financial titan, and now, a woman he had dismissed as a washed-up pregnant housewife was holding the knife to his throat.

"What do you want?" Arthur hissed through clenched teeth.

Naomi didn't smile. There was no triumph in her heart, only the cold, necessary satisfaction of closure. "Three things. First, every single eminent domain claim against the Asheville cooperative is permanently dropped by noon today. Second, the commercial land deeds are transferred into the community trust with zero encumbrances. And third..." Naomi paused, her eyes narrowing. "You leave North Carolina and never set foot south of the Mason-Dixon line again."

Arthur stared at her, knowing he had been checkmated. If he fought, he went to prison alongside Julian. If he surrendered, he lost a fifty-million-dollar land grab and suffered a public humiliation that would destroy his reputation forever.

"You have until noon," Naomi said, turning on her heel. "Come, Lucas. Victor. We have a farm to run."
