Chapter 12 - The Loose Brick

The house suddenly felt suffocatingly small. Elena dropped the receiver back onto its cradle, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. *Look behind the brick.*
The phrase echoed in her mind, unlocking a door to memories she had fought desperately to bury. When they first moved into this restored 19th-century farmhouse, the inspector had noted several eccentric architectural quirks, including a non-functional brick fireplace in the master bedroom on the second floor.
Elena hurried up the stairs, her footsteps light and frantic. She paused outside Hailey’s bedroom door, listening intently. The soothing scratch of the violin bow continued uninterrupted. Hailey was safe, for the moment.
Pushing open the door to her own bedroom, Elena walked straight to the faux fireplace. The structure was made of aged, soot-stained red bricks, imported from a demolished textile mill in upstate New York. She dropped to her knees, running her fingertips along the mortar lines.
Years of accumulated dust smeared across her hands. She pressed her palms against the central section of the hearth, pushing, pulling, and twisting. Nothing happened. The bricks felt solid, unyielding, cemented into place with decades-old lime mortar.
"Damn it," she muttered under her breath, her fingernails scraping against the rough clay.
She stood up quickly, rushing to the hallway closet to grab a heavy steel fireplace poker. Returning to the hearth, she wedged the flat tip of the poker into the vertical mortar joint just left of the central keystone. She leaned her entire body weight onto the iron shaft.
*Crack.*
A small chunk of dry mortar gave way, showering gray dust over her knees. Encouraged, Elena wedged the poker deeper and twisted. With a hollow, echoing pop, the entire brick shifted inward, pivoting on a concealed metal pin.
Reaching inside the dark, dusty cavity, her fingers brushed against something cold and metallic. She pulled it out into the dim light of the bedroom.
It was a heavy, military-grade flash drive, encased in a rugged rubberized shell, along with a folded sheet of heavy-stock bond paper. With trembling fingers, Elena unfolded the paper. Scrawled across it in precise, elegant fountain pen ink were coordinates: *42.1583° N, 75.9152° W*, followed by a single sentence:
*“They are coming for the girl. Use the key before they reach the ridge.”*

Before Elena could fully process the coordinates, the motion-activated security floodlight outside the bedroom window flared to life, casting long, writhing shadows across the hardwood floor.
