Chapter 17 - The Extraction

Chaos erupted on the ground floor. Shouts, heavy combat boots scrambling toward the exit, and the sharp *crack* of flash-bang grenades detonating outside filled the night air with blinding white light and deafening concussive shockwaves.

"Elena! Stay down!" a familiar voice roared over the comms channel built into the safe-room radio receiver Elena still wore clipped to her belt.

It was Marshal David Miller, the veteran federal agent who had overseen their protection detail three years ago before retiring to an active advisory role.

"David?" Elena yelled back into her collar mic, shielding her eyes from the swirling dust storm inside the loft.

"We’ve got you covered, Elena! Don't move!" Miller's voice crackled through the small earpiece. "The tactical team is securing the perimeter. Vance’s men are pinned down by the east fence!"

Up in the hayloft, the intruder who had been climbing the ladder abandoned his position, dropping backward down the rungs in a frantic scramble to escape before the federal agents breached the structure. Within seconds, heavy combat boots thudded against the ground floor as federal operatives swarmed the interior, shouting orders and subduing Vance’s remaining security detail.

The harsh clatter of zip-ties being fastened echoed from below, followed by Vance’s frustrated shouts as he was forced to the ground.

Elena stood up slowly, lowering the Glock and tucking it back into her waistband. She turned around to check on Hailey, who was sitting wide-eyed beneath the wool blanket, clutching her blue backpack.

"You okay, sweetie?" Elena asked softly, kneeling down and brushing the straw out of her daughter’s dark hair.

"I'm okay, Mom," Hailey whispered, throwing her arms around Elena’s neck and burying her face in her shoulder. "Are the bad men gone?"

"They're gone," Elena promised, holding her tightly. "The marshals are here. We're safe."

A few moments later, heavy footsteps ascended the wooden ladder into the hayloft. Marshal David Miller appeared over the edge, his weather-beaten face etched with exhaustion and relief. He wore a heavy tactical vest over a black windbreaker, his sidearm holstered at his hip.

"Elena," Miller said, catching his breath as he stepped into the dusty loft. "You look like hell."

"Good to see you too, David," Elena replied dryly, standing up with Hailey still holding her hand. "Care to explain why a black-ops squad managed to walk right up to my front door without an alert from the federal monitoring station?"

Miller’s expression darkened, his professional demeanor turning grim. "Because the breach wasn't just physical, Elena. Someone high up inside the Department of Justice compromised the secure relay frequencies. Vance didn't find you by accident. He had inside help."
