Chapter 24 - The Dead-Man's Hand

Julian Jr.’s face drained of color for a fraction of a second before his expression twisted into a mask of pure rage. He lunged forward, drawing a sleek, silver-plated Beretta from his shoulder holster with terrifying speed.

"You lying bitch!" Julian roared, leveling the barrel straight at Elena’s chest. "There is no switch! You're bluffing!"

"Am I?" Elena didn't flinch. She pulled her hand out of her coat pocket, holding up her wrist to display a sleek, military-grade biometric fitness tracker flashing a steady, pulsing green light. "This device monitors my pulse and my location. Every sixty seconds, it pings an encrypted server shared with the international press and three separate federal investigative task forces. If my heart stops, or if this tracker is disconnected by force, the entire Vance syndicate ledger—complete with the names of every sitting senator and corrupt judge currently keeping you out of a federal penitentiary—goes public."

Julian froze, the gun trembling slightly in his grip. He was trapped in his own trap. If he killed her, he destroyed his own empire.

"You're bluffing," Julian hissed through clenched teeth, though the sweat beading on his forehead betrayed his absolute panic. "You wouldn't risk your daughter's life just to take me down."

"Try me," Elena challenged, taking a deliberate step closer to him, the muzzle of his gun mere inches from her sternum. "I’ve spent ten years running, Julian. I’m done hiding in the shadows. If my daughter and I go down, we're taking your entire corrupted world with us."

Before Julian could react, a deafening explosion ripped through the western wall of the warehouse.

*BOOM!*

The corrugated iron buckled inward in a blinding flash of orange fire and flying debris. The shockwave knocked both Elena and Julian off their feet, sending them crashing hard onto the dusty concrete floor. Heavy smoke billowed into the cavernous space, triggering the overhead emergency sprinkler systems. Ice-cold water began pouring down in torrents, hissing against the burning wreckage of the wall.

Through the dense smoke and blinding water, heavy tactical boots pounded against the concrete. Shouts rang out through the chaotic din: *“FBI! Federal Agents! Drop your weapons! Nobody move!”*

Elena wiped the water and soot from her eyes, coughing violently as she scrambled backward against a stack of crates. Through the swirling fog, a tall, imposing figure in heavy tactical gear stepped through the breached wall, lowering a smoking breaching charge.

It was Special Agent Vance—not Julian’s corrupt relative, but Marcus’s hand-picked successor inside the federal Marshal Service, who had been quietly tracking the syndicate’s internal communications for months.

"Elena!" Agent Vance shouted over the roar of the sprinklers, scanning the room with his assault rifle raised. "Are you alright?"

Elena pushed herself up, coughing, and pointed directly at Julian Jr., who was groaning on the floor a few yards away, trying to reach for his dropped pistol.

"He's right there!" Elena yelled. "Don't let him reach the key!"
