Chapter 28 - The Unexpected Encounter

The afternoon awards ceremony was a blur of flashing cameras, applause, and inspiring speeches from leading innovators in science and technology. When the grand prize for the National Young Scientist Showcase was announced, the auditorium erupted into thunderous applause as Hailey’s name echoed through the massive PA system: *“First Place National Winner—Haile Vance!”*
Hailey walked up onto the grand stage to accept a crystal globe trophy and a full academic scholarship grant, her face practically glowing with radiant joy.
Later that evening, after the crowds had thinned and the exhibition hall began to quiet down, Elena and Hailey strolled through the grand marble lobby toward the exit, laughing and talking about the upcoming celebration dinner.
"I still can't believe I won national first place!" Hailey exclaimed, clutching her crystal trophy like it was the most precious treasure in the world. "A scholarship, Mom! College is practically paid for!"
"I told you from day one that your project was brilliant," Elena laughed, wrapping her arm around Hailey's shoulder. "Now, what kind of celebratory dinner does a national champion demand? Pizza? Steaks? Or more pancakes?"
Before Hailey could answer, a tall, distinguished figure in a tailored dark suit stepped out from the shadows of a marble pillar near the grand exit.
"Pancakes sound like an exceptional choice for a champion," a deep, familiar voice said softly.
Elena froze instantly. Her hand dropped from Hailey's shoulder, instinctively sliding toward her handbag where her legal concealed carry permit and compact firearm rested. Her entire body went rigid as she stared at the man stepping into the pool of warm chandelier light.
It wasn't Julian. It wasn't an assassin.
It was Director Thomas Vance—the retired head of federal internal oversight who had personally signed off on the dismantling of the corrupted syndicate months ago. But more importantly, he was the man who had secretly handed Elena the encrypted dossier ten years ago that started her entire escape.
"Director Vance," Elena breathed, her heart hammering against her ribs despite the lack of hostility in his expression. "What are you doing here?"
Thomas Vance offered a calm, reassuring smile, stepping forward with his hands visible and empty. He looked older, with more silver in his hair, but his eyes held the same sharp, protective intelligence.

"Relax, Elena," Thomas said softly, glancing down briefly at Hailey, who looked up with curious, intelligent eyes. "I’m not here with a threat or a warning. I’m here to deliver a graduation gift."
