Chapter 26 - The Ashes of Vance Logistics

The federal raid on Vance Logistics turned out to be the domino that brought down an entire underground syndicate spanning three continents. Over the next forty-eight hours, federal indictments were unsealed against dozens of high-ranking corporate executives, corrupt judges, and politicians who had accepted bribes to keep the Vance family's illicit financial network operating from the shadows.
Elena sat at the wooden kitchen table of her coastal home, watching the morning news broadcast on the small television set. The anchor’s voice was crisp and triumphant as images of raided corporate offices and handcuffed suspects flashed across the screen.
*“...marking the end of a ten-year federal investigation into the Vance financial syndicate,”* the news anchor reported. *“Authorities confirmed this morning that Julian Vance Jr., operating under a series of alias identities, orchestrated the revival of the criminal enterprise from a network of shell companies based out of Boston. Federal prosecutors assure the public that all remaining assets have been frozen and seized.”*
Elena clicked the television off with a remote control, the sudden silence of the house feeling warm, inviting, and entirely peaceful.
Footsteps padded lightly down the stairs, and Hailey walked into the kitchen, wearing her favorite oversized yellow sweater and holding her regional science fair trophy proudly in both hands.
"Mom, look what Mr. Henderson dropped off early this morning," Hailey beamed, setting the gleaming golden trophy right in the center of the kitchen table. "They updated the state records, and my cellular biology project didn't just win first place—it qualified for the national young scientist showcase in Washington, D.C. next month!"
Elena’s heart swelled with an overwhelming wave of pride and joy. She stood up from her chair and wrapped her arms around Hailey, burying her face in her daughter’s soft hair.
"I am so, so proud of you, sweetheart," Elena whispered, kissing the top of Hailey’s head. "Washington, D.C.? Look at you, changing the world before you're even twelve years old."
"We get to go together, right?" Hailey asked, looking up with wide, hopeful eyes. "The letter said the trip includes a guest pass for a parent."
"Every single step of the way," Elena promised, smiling radiantly. "Pancakes with extra whipped cream to celebrate?"
"You read my mind!" Hailey cheered, dancing back toward the pantry to grab the ingredients.

As Hailey set to work mixing the batter, Elena walked over to the front window. The sun was breaking through the lingering morning clouds, casting a golden, brilliant light across the endless expanse of the ocean. The white pebble she had picked up from the beach days ago sat safely on the windowsill—a quiet reminder of where they had been, and how far they had climbed to reach the light.
