Chapter 11 - The Shadow of Yesterday

The thunderous applause of the grand ballroom faded into a distant hum as the heavy oak doors of the VIP lounge closed behind us. I gently adjusted little Lily against my shoulder, her soft breathing a steady, grounding anchor in the whirlwind of our new reality. Marcus stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, the glittering lights of the Manhattan skyline reflecting in his sharp, intelligent eyes. He turned, a glass of amber whiskey in his hand, though he hadn’t touched it.
"The board meeting is scheduled for 9:00 AM sharp tomorrow," Marcus said, his voice low and measured. "Brenda and Richard have been frantically liquidating whatever assets they managed to salvage before the freeze orders hit their accounts, but our legal team has blocked every offshore transfer. They’re effectively locked out of the entire Sterling estate."
I walked over to the plush velvet sofa, sitting down slowly to avoid waking Lily, who had finally drifted off to sleep. "Let them run," I replied, my voice calm, stripped of the terror that had once paralyzed me on that freezing bathroom floor. "A cornered rat always makes the fatal mistake of biting the wrong wire. Have we heard anything from Linda?"
"Nothing directly," Marcus answered, taking a seat across from me. "Her social circle has completely evaporated. The same society matrons who used to fawn over her charity galas are now pretending they never even knew her name. Karma has a peculiar way of balancing the books, Elena."
"It's not karma, Marcus. It’s accountability," I corrected him softly. "For five years, I let them convince me that I was a guest in my own life—a prop to be used, degraded, and discarded when convenient. But every empire built on cruelty has a structural flaw. They just happened to build theirs out of glass."
Suddenly, my phone buzzed against the polished mahogany table. A single unknown number flashed on the screen. Marcus immediately reached for his tablet, his fingers flying across the screen to trace the signal.
"Don't worry," I said, holding up a hand to stop him. "I think I know who it is."
I picked up the phone and pressed accept, putting it on speaker.
"Elena?" A voice hissed through the speaker—frantic, trembling, and entirely stripped of its former venom. It was Brenda. "Elena, please... you have to listen to me. Richard is out of his mind. He’s destroyed. The police are asking questions about the forged deeds, and our bank accounts are completely frozen. We can’t even buy groceries. Please, you're a mother—you know what it's like to have everything ripped away. Have mercy on us."
I listened to the desperate plea, feeling a strange, hollow numbness where anger used to reside. The woman who had ripped my newborn from my arms, who had smirked while her son pinned me to a bathroom floor, was now begging for scraps.
"Mercy, Brenda?" I asked, my tone chillingly flat. "Did you show mercy when you dragged me by my hair? Did you show mercy when you plotted to strip away my parental rights and throw me out onto the street with nothing?"
"That was Richard! He forced me—"
"You were the architect of every single humiliation," I interrupted, my voice cutting through her excuses like a razor. "You enjoyed it. And now, you get to experience the exact reality you designed for me. Except, unlike you, I won't leave you on a bathroom floor. I’ll leave you to the justice system you spent a lifetime bribing."
I hung up the phone and tossed it back onto the table. Marcus looked at me with an expression of profound respect. "What's our next move?"
May you like
"We pay them a visit," I said, standing up and settling Lily more comfortably in my arms. "It’s time to settle the final account."
