Chapter 17 - Whispers in the Dark

The gala ended late into the night, and by the time we returned to the penthouse, the city outside was quiet and bathed in moonlight. I tiptoed softly into Lily’s nursery. The nightlight cast a warm, amber glow across her crib. She was fast asleep, clutching a small stuffed bunny in her tiny hands. I leaned over, pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead, breathing in the sweet, innocent scent of baby shampoo.
"She's sleeping like a little angel," Marcus whispered, standing quietly in the doorway.
I turned, walking out into the hallway, pulling my silk wrap tighter around my shoulders. "She is. After everything she and I went through, seeing her safe and happy like this... it’s everything."
"You earned every piece of this peace, Elena," Marcus said softly, stepping closer. His eyes held a depth of emotion that made my breath catch slightly in my throat. "You didn't just survive; you built a sanctuary."
"I couldn't have done it without you, Marcus," I admitted, looking up into his eyes. "You believed in me when I barely believed in myself."
"I always knew who you were, Elena. Even when you were trapped behind those locked doors, the fire was always there."
Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the entryway console. I walked over and picked it up. It was an automated security alert from the private monitoring system at the old Sterling estate.
Marcus stepped beside me, looking at the tablet screen as he synchronized his own device with the alert feed. "That’s strange," he frowned. "Motion sensors triggered in the main basement archive of the estate. The property has been locked down by federal order. No one should be anywhere near it."
I stared at the live camera feed displayed on the tablet screen. A single flashlight beam flickered erratically in the dark, dusty corridors of the old mansion’s subterranean vault.
"Who would be breaking into a sealed, bankrupt estate in the middle of the night?" I murmured, a chill running down my spine.
"Could be scavengers trying to salvage old art or hidden cash," Marcus said, his jaw tightening. "Or... someone looking for something Richard left behind before the federal raid."

I looked from the tablet screen back to Marcus, my investigative instincts kicking in with razor-sharp clarity. "Call the private security detail and local authorities. We're going to the estate."
