Chapter 21 - The Ghost from the International Terminal

The voice crackling through the phone speaker was distorted by static, but the sheer desperation laced into every syllable was unmistakable.
"Elena... Elena, please. You have to listen to me. They lied to you. Every single document Richard showed you... it was a fabrication. A complete forgery orchestrated from the very beginning."
Marcus immediately leaned forward, his protective instincts flaring as his hand hovered over the phone, as if he could physically shield me from the audio coming out of the tiny speaker. His jaw tightened sharply, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Hang up, Elena. It's a trap. It's probably Richard's legal team or some desperate proxy trying to rattle you before the final asset liquidation tomorrow morning."
I didn't move. My gaze remained fixed on the glowing screen displaying the restricted international prefix. A cold, analytical calm washed over me, replacing the phantom tremors of the past. I remembered the exact weight of the mahogany floorboards in the penthouse, the chilling arrogance in Brenda’s voice when she ripped my newborn daughter from my arms, and the smug, untouchable smirk Richard wore as he thought he had completely buried me.
"Who is this?" I asked, my voice steady, carrying the cold authority of a woman who no longer feared the dark. "Identify yourself before I disconnect and notify the federal warden."
A sharp, rattling gasp echoed from the other end, followed by the unmistakable sound of heavy prison doors clanging shut in the background. "It’s Victor. Victor Vance. Former chief financial compliance officer for Vance Global Holdings."
Marcus’s breath hitched. The name hit the open night air like a physical blow. Victor Vance—Richard’s estranged uncle and the original architect of the Vance family fortune—had vanished five years ago under mysterious circumstances. Official records from the Department of Justice claimed he had fled to a non-extradition country in South America amidst a massive federal embezzlement probe, taking billions in hidden offshore accounts with him. Richard had always blamed Victor for nearly ruining the family name, using that narrative to consolidate absolute, unchecked power over the board of directors.
"Victor?" I repeated, narrowing my eyes. "Richard told the SEC, the FBI, and every major financial publication that you looted the corporate treasury and ran. He claimed you left him to pick up the pieces."
"A lie!" Victor’s voice cracked, thick with decades of bitter betrayal and exhausted regret. "Richard engineered the entire scandal. He forged my signature on the wire transfer authorizations while I was recovering from emergency surgery in Zurich. When I discovered what he had done and threatened to expose the illegal shell companies he was using to bleed the company dry, he framed me. He had me locked away in a foreign correctional facility using a network of bribed prosecutors and forged extradition warrants."
Victor paused, coughing violently before choking out the sentence that made the blood freeze in my veins. "And Elena... he didn’t just frame me. He’s the one who orchestrated the hostile takeover of your family’s estate before you even met him. He targeted you deliberately. The marriage was never real. It was a calculated corporate hit to absorb your father’s patent portfolio."
The garden around us seemed to vanish. The twinkling fairy lights blurred into meaningless pinpricks of light. Every single nightmare, every tear I had shed on that cold bathroom floor, every agonizing second I spent clawing my way back from the absolute brink of destruction clicked into place with terrifying precision. It wasn't bad luck. It was an execution.
"Where are you calling from?" I demanded, my pulse hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird, though my voice remained terrifyingly calm.
"I’m not in South America anymore," Victor whispered frantically, the sound of a private jet engine roaring faintly in the background through the static. "I’ve been extradited under a secret federal witness protection arrangement. My plane just touched down at Teterboro Airport. I have the physical ledger—the original, unedited financial records containing every single illegal transaction Richard, Brenda, and their offshore associates made over the last decade. If you want true, irreversible justice... you need to meet me before dawn."
Marcus stood up abruptly, knocking his chair back against the stone patio. "Elena, this could be an elaborate sting. If Richard finds out Victor is back on American soil, he will pull every political and legal string he has to silence him permanently before sunrise."
I looked toward the upstairs window where little Lily was sleeping peacefully, safe and warm in her crib. I thought of the months of terror, the sleepless nights, and the absolute humiliation they had subjected me to. They had taken my dignity, my home, and my child, expecting me to crawl away and die in silence.
Instead, I stood up, smoothing down my dress with fingers that didn't tremble at all.

"Let him try," I whispered, locking eyes with Marcus. "Get the car. We're going to Teterboro."
