Chapter 14 - The Confession of the Queen

The glass doors of my office parted silently, and Linda stepped inside. Gone were the designer Chanel suits and the haughty, untouchable posture that had once defined her presence in every high-society room. Instead, she wore a simple, faded black coat, her hair unstyled, her eyes darting nervously around the sprawling, sunlit office as if expecting the floor to drop out from beneath her feet.

She looked at me—sitting behind the massive mahogany desk that had once belonged to her son—and swallowed hard, her pride visibly shattering into pieces.

"Sit down, Linda," I said evenly, gesturing to the sleek leather chair opposite my desk.

Linda hesitated before walking over and sitting down, her hands tightly clutched in her lap. "Elena... I know things look bad. I know what I said, what I did... letting Richard treat you the way he did, standing by while Brenda took your baby..." Her voice cracked, a pathetic tremor betraying her manufactured composure. "I was a fool. Richard manipulated us all."

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the desk, locking my gaze onto hers. "Save the performance, Linda. You weren't manipulated. You were the ringleader. You taught Richard that cruelty was a sign of strength, and you treated me like an intruder in my own marriage from day one."

Linda flinched, biting her lower lip. She reached into her coat pocket with trembling fingers and pulled out a small, encrypted USB flash drive, placing it carefully on the desk.

"This..." Linda whispered, her voice barely audible. "This has everything. Every illegal transaction Richard made behind the board's back, every bribe paid to municipal inspectors, every hidden property title registered under fake names. It’s enough to put him away for twenty years. No chance of parole."

I looked down at the small piece of plastic, then back up at her. "And what do you expect in exchange for this, Linda? Immunity? A stipend to keep living in your penthouse?"

"Just... let me keep the apartment on Fifth Avenue," she pleaded, tears finally spilling over her lashes. "Just enough to live on. I can't go to prison, Elena. I won't survive it."

I leaned back in my chair, letting out a slow, measured breath. I picked up the flash drive, turning it over in my fingers.

"Linda," I began, my voice cold and steady. "You spent decades looking down on people, stepping on anyone who didn't fit your definition of perfection. You thought power was about how much you could control." I stood up, walking slowly around the desk until I stood right beside her chair, looking down at her. "You give me this drive, and the federal prosecutors will receive it with my recommendation for state cooperation. You won't go to prison. But the penthouse? All your luxury cars? Your charity board seats? They are gone. Every single cent of illicit wealth is being confiscated."

Linda stared at me in sheer horror, realizing the magnitude of her total ruin. She opened her mouth to protest, but looking into my eyes, she saw the undeniable wall of absolute justice. She slumped forward, defeated, whispering, "Do whatever you want."
