Chapter 27 - The Shadows of the Past

The interior of the Greenwich estate was completely silent as Marcus and I walked through the grand hallways, accompanied by a team of professional estate cleaners and inventory specialists. The luxury furniture, the expensive art collections, and the designer decorations were all tagged with federal inventory stickers, awaiting final liquidation or permanent integration into my personal estate trust.
I walked up the grand staircase, my hand gliding smoothly along the polished wooden banister. Every step brought back searing flashes of memory—the night Richard cornered me in the hallway, the cruel whispers of Brenda echoing from the balcony, the absolute despair of feeling utterly trapped with no way out.
When I reached the top of the stairs, I didn't turn toward the master suite. Instead, I walked down the quiet, carpeted corridor toward the nursery.
The door was unlocked. I pushed it open gently.
Little Lily was fast asleep in her arms—having fallen asleep in the car during the drive—resting peacefully against Marcus’s shoulder as he carried her inside behind me. The nursery was painted in soft, warm tones of lavender and cream, decorated with delicate hand-painted clouds and floating stars. It was a sanctuary of innocence, completely untouched by the malice that had consumed the rest of the house.
Marcus gently transferred Lily into her crib, tucking her baby blanket securely around her shoulders before turning back to look at me with a tender, reassuring smile.
"She's safe here now," Marcus whispered softly, stepping closer and wrapping his arm around my waist. "No one will ever breach these walls again. My private security detail has secured the entire perimeter, and the local police department has a permanent patrol unit stationed at the front gates."
I leaned my head against his chest, listening to the steady, reassuring beat of his heart. "I know, Marcus. But walking through these halls... it reminds me of how close I came to losing everything. If you hadn't answered my call that first day... if I hadn't found the strength to fight back..."
"You didn't survive because of luck, Elena," Marcus interrupted gently, lifting my chin so my eyes met his. "You survived because beneath all that manufactured fear, you are the strongest person I have ever met. You brought down a corporate empire from the inside out."
Before I could reply, my phone buzzed sharply on the small wooden dresser nearby.
I stepped away from Marcus and picked it up. The screen displayed an incoming notification from the federal prosecutor’s office.
*URGENT: PRE-TRIAL ARRAIGNMENT SCHEDULED FOR TOMORROW MORNING. RICHARD AND BRENDA VANCE REQUESTING EMERGENCY PLEA BARGAIN.*
A cold, knowing smile touched my lips. The mighty Vances, who had spent their entire lives treating human beings like disposable chess pieces, were finally begging for mercy.
"They're cracking," I said, showing the screen to Marcus. "Their defense team is trying to secure a plea deal before the full extent of their offshore holdings is made public."
Marcus glanced at the notification, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Are you going to accept a plea, or are you going to let the judge throw the book at them?"
I looked back at the crib where Lily was sleeping peacefully, her tiny chest rising and falling in a steady, serene rhythm. I thought of the cold bathroom floor, of Brenda’s smug smirk, of Richard’s arrogant sneer.
May you like
"A plea deal?" I said, my voice cold, sharp, and absolute. "Not a chance. They don't get to negotiate the terms of their destruction."
