Chapter 23 - The Trap Closes

Richard stopped in his tracks, his smug expression faltering for a fraction of a second before he quickly recovered, smoothing the lapel of his tuxedo with calculated nonchalance. He glanced dismissively at Victor, then back at me, his eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction.

"You always did have an overactive imagination, Elena," Richard chuckled, a dry, patronizing sound that bounced off the metal walls. "Look around you. You’re standing in a private aviation facility in the middle of nowhere, holding stolen documents provided by a federally indicted fugitive. Do you honestly believe any court in the country is going to look at these papers and rule in your favor? My legal team owns half the appellate judges in this state."

"Your legal team *did* own them," a calm, deeply authoritative voice echoed from the darkness near the entrance of the hangar.

Richard’s head whipped around as Marcus stepped out from the shadows near the rear of the sedan, holding his smartphone up with the speakerphone active. The soft blue glow of the screen illuminated his sharp, unyielding features.

"Who the hell are you?" Richard barked, his face tightening with sudden unease as he signaled his security detail to fan out.

"Marcus Sterling," my attorney replied smoothly, taking slow, deliberate steps forward until he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with me. "Senior partner at Sterling & Thorne Corporate Litigators. And for the record, Mr. Vance, we aren't relying on local appellate judges anymore."

Richard let out a sharp, dismissive bark of laughter, though a faint twitch near his left eye betrayed his growing agitation. "Sterling? You're playing in the minor leagues, son. I have board members flying in from Geneva right now to ratify the total liquidation of Elena’s remaining assets. By tomorrow afternoon, she won't even be able to afford a cup of coffee, let on a lawyer."

"Is that right?" I asked softly, stepping past Marcus. I reached into my coat pocket, pulled out my own phone, and tapped the screen twice. "Brenda must have told you her favorite bedtime story about how helpless I am. Would you like me to call her right now and ask how her evening is going?"

Richard’s smile vanished completely. The air in the hangar suddenly felt heavy, charged with a sudden, suffocating tension. "What did you do?"

Before I could answer, the piercing shriek of police sirens cut through the night air from outside the hangar. Not one or two squad cars—dozens of them. Within seconds, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the entire tarmac, casting strobing reflections across the fuselage of the private jet.

Heavy boots swarmed the perimeter. Before Richard’s security operatives could even reach for their holsters, half a dozen federal marshals and state police officers poured through the open doors, their weapons drawn and tactical gear locked and loaded.

"Federal Law Enforcement! Nobody move!" a commanding voice shouted, echoing off the steel rafters.

Two senior federal agents stepped to the front of the armed unit, flanked by an official-looking investigator holding a massive stack of federal arrest warrants. The lead agent walked straight up to Richard, his expression carved from granite.

"Richard Vance," the agent announced loudly, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under federal arrest for corporate securities fraud, money laundering, obstruction of justice, and the illegal interstate transportation of forged financial instruments."

Richard stumbled backward, his face draining of all color as panic finally broke through his arrogant facade. "This is a mistake! You don't know who I am! I demand to speak to my attorneys immediately! This is corporate harassment!"

"You can speak to whoever you want down at the federal holding facility," the agent replied coldly, grabbing Richard by the arm and spinning him around. The metallic click of handcuffs snapping shut echoed loudly in the cavernous hangar.

As Richard was shoved past me toward a waiting squad car, his eyes locked onto mine, wide with raw, unadulterated terror and furious betrayal. He opened his mouth to scream, but the heavy door of the cruiser slammed shut, cutting off his voice entirely.

I stood tall on the wet concrete, watching the red and blue lights flash against the dark sky, knowing the first domino had finally fallen.
