Chapter 22 - THE MIDNIGHT KNOCK IN ATLANTA

Daniel Mercer stared at the stack of certified legal notices scattered across his mahogany desk, his hands shaking so violently he could barely hold his coffee mug. The silence in the house was suffocating. Ever since that fateful birthday party weeks ago—the viral video that had briefly amused his social circle before mysteriously vanishing from the internet entirely, the sudden disappearance of his mistress Chloe, and the eerie, deafening radio silence from Claire—his world had begun to unravel like a cheap sweater caught on a jagged nail.

Chloe had vanished three days ago. No text, no calls, her apartment completely cleared out as if she had never existed. When Daniel tried to visit her agency, security guards had physically thrown him out onto the pavement, muttering threats about a "blacklist" that made no sense.

Then came the financial tsunami.

His phone buzzed violently on the desk. He snatched it up, hoping against hope for a reprieve from a bank manager or a shipping partner. "Hello?" he barked, his voice cracking with exhaustion.

"Mr. Mercer?" a flat, bureaucratic voice responded. "This is Detective Miller, Atlanta PD. We need you to come down to the precinct immediately regarding an ongoing investigation into corporate fraud, tax evasion, and illegal asset concealment involving Mercer Logistics."

Daniel’s breath caught in his throat. "Fraud? Tax evasion? That’s impossible! My books are clean—my accountants handle everything!"

"Your accountants resigned an hour ago, sir," the detective replied coldly. "And the federal indictments were signed by the Department of Justice thirty minutes before that. You have one hour to turn yourself in at the downtown precinct. If you aren't here, a warrant will be issued for your immediate arrest."

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Daniel dropped the phone. It clattered against the desk, sliding off the edge and shattering on the hardwood floor. He stumbled backward, his knees buckling until he hit the leather sofa. The walls of his study seemed to close in around him. The framed photographs of his successful corporate deals, his awards, his smiling face beside Chloe—they all seemed to mock him.

For the first time, a cold, paralyzing terror gripped his chest. Who had the power to trigger a federal indictment, freeze every corporate account, and completely erase his mistress within a span of forty-eight hours?

He thought of Claire. The quiet, submissive woman who had wiped their son's tears and walked out the front door without a single scream or threat. The woman he had mocked as a nobody.

"No," Daniel whispered, clutching his head in his hands as panic tore through his veins. "No... that’s impossible. She was nobody. Her father was just... just..."

He stopped. He had never actually checked who her father was. He had assumed, in his arrogant blindness, that she came from nothing because she never bragged, never demanded luxury, and lived simply for their son.

The front doorbell rang. Three loud, heavy, authoritative thuds that echoed through the empty, echoing mansion like the strikes of a judge's gavel.
